Hey, can someone tell me something...
Quark is ued by all major record labels for CD & DVD coverart... what is it used for, Layout? or Design?...
e.g. Photoshop is Design & Creativity based, were as Quark seems like a layout program!?
Anyway what I mean is, is Quark only used to get the measurements right and to add text to the artwork?, or just for measurments?
Can someone explain?
Thanks

Quark (and InDesign) are layout programs where you bring all your design elements that you create in both raster and vector programs together and add typesetting.
The strength of a layout program is being able to do multiple pages (like in booklets, magazines or catalogs) and also ability to create professional formatted type stylesheets.
Layout programs will also preflight your files before sending them to the printer so that you know that you have everything linked and all fonts are collected.

OK, so say I make a CD Cover in Photoshop but dont add text, then I bring it in there and add text etc etc... what do I save it as & why does some .eps graphics not show up when imported?...
Also, why does imagery look so grainy and crap but ok when exported as a Tiff etc?
Thanks alot!
Save it as a quark document and collect for output. This will collect and copy all of the fonts, images and the quark document so you can send it off to the printer.
Your image looks grainy because quark displays it as a low resolution picture file so the program works quickly and is not bogged down by displaying high resolution photos. If you need to see it in high res you can change it - item menu > Display Resolution > High.

I see, I suppose that make alot of sense!
OK, well I've a few questions, I might be doing a CD Cover for a label but not too sure about colour seperation?, its whatever way they print the Covers... anyone know how I save the seperate colours in photoshop... p.s. if I need to know a few more things about Quark can I keep asking here?
Are you designing the cd cover in spot color or CMYK? I think you asked some questions about metallic inks so check out the links below for some info about creating spot colors in photoshop.

I'm sure there's some people that get their whole graphic design education online but I wouldn't recommend it.

but why using quark when you just learn it... Why not using Illustrator/FreeHand/CorelDraw for the text part of the layout?

Hi, I'd like to learn Quark cause this is what the indsutry standard is for CD coverart etc, so by not learning how to use it properly I'm limiting my self!
Check out the Visual Quickstart Series (http://safari.peachpit.com/JVXSL.asp?x=1&mode=section&sortKey=rank&sortOrder=desc&view=book&xmlid=0321205480&g=&srchText=quark&code=&h=&m=&l=1&catid=&s=1&b=1&f=1&t=1&c=1&u=1&r=&o=1&n=1&d=1&p=1&a=0&page=0) from Peachpit Press. Easy to read and understand, they are really great little books.
