this isn't a question about copryright in itself, it's a question about how do I type that damn little symbol?! For some reason, I can't get it to show up on my computer. I've tried hitting alt + 1069 on my weak PC about 10,000 times and it never shows up. And also I'm trying to get the phono symbol to show up as well to no success. What's goin on here? I've tried it in photoshop, illustrator and quark, even in my e-mail body just to at least try to copy and paste it into my little project. Can someone, anyone please help me figure this out?

also, if I just do it as an image, how do I get rid of that background in quark? I just want it to look like it was typed directly to my project rather than retaining the white background from either p-shop or ill.

-thanks from the new one here

Go to start menu > run>

then type this in

%SystemRoot%\System32\charmap.exe

thanks. Takes care of the copyright symbol, but there's no (P) to be found. And I can't seem to find it anywhere through google as text to copy and paste, I'm only finding images which I don't need.

Isn't there a dingbat you could load or something. I only know the keystokes for my Mac.

I'm stumped on the phono symbol. It's either dingbats or create the symbol in illustrator to overprint. Select image box and CTRL-T in Quark to bring up the box properties, then specify none for color.

I know about the box properties, although it makes no difference what color I set it to it seems as quark sets white background to images that I've made with a transparent background. So there's something I don't get, or it's not possible to import an image transparent. I wish I could find the dingbat for the phono symbol. As I go through all these cd covers I'm looking at they have a nice little typed phono, and I've done it before but for the life of me I can't remember how I got it. I found one text version on a site that I could copy and paste, but then quark doesn't recognize it in whatever font I try so I end up with a question mark. Frustrating to say the least.

thanks all.

First, as for the extended character set in Windows, it's important that you enter the Alt-xxxx through the numeric keyboard. Using the top row number keys won't work.

As for synthesizing a phono symbol, you might try using a font with a solid circle cap 'O' and baseline shift a reduced size 'P' to it's vertical center, and then back kern it to fit in the circle. Once everything's okay, just cut and paste.

ha another pointed out this was the first thing to come up in google when searching for the phono symbol.

anyway, thanks broacher, although this is the first I've seen your response, i did come to the same conclusion that you gave me, and it's already been sent out thankfully. As for the number keys, I suppose the problem is that I don't have a numeral keypad, just a top row because I'm on a damn laptop. I really need to get another computer at home.
