I finally decided today to do something about my logo. The original was designed 5 years ago, without a whole lot of thought put into it.
We are a website design company near the East coast, hence the name and nautical colors. While I realize the new design doesn't convey website design any more than the original did, I'm just not sure what to add that's not already cliched, or would complicate the simple design of the lighthouse.
Thanks for your comments and suggestions.

If you are unhappy with your original logo that you said did not have a whole lot of thought put in to it, I would suggest starting from scratch. Your new version is basically a souped up version of the original. Try going in a whole new direction. Your logo represents you. So dare I say that your work is created without a whole lot of thought put in to it? A client would be justified in thinking that just based on your logo.

The light house image that you have does not work. At least for me anyways. It looks like a bowling ball ontop. What about simplifying an image like this?

This actually looks like a lighthouse.
Also, the light should taper more... it's still really hard edged.
Like everyone else on here says... design it in B & W first.
Cheers and keep working on it

Do you really want to pay for printing a three color logo?

while you are focusing on web design, some day you may want to get something printed, so keeping the number of colors in mind is a good idea.
You might want to try brainstorming on the idea and sketching out some concepts with a pencil and paper before hitting the computer... that always helps ME with logo design.
Also, design in black and white to start... that will make sure that your concept is strong before you start adding color. After all, a logo needs to work in black and white for faxing, newspaper ads, and things like that.

I would pick a color scheme but limit it two two colors , 3 color printing is expensive. Try to make it look more moderne, I like the typesetting of the words "design group". And mabye dont include an actual lighthouse in the design, but some shapes that suggests light. Anyway just an opinion.

i think the use of an actual lighthouse is important for company/brand recognition, especially since you're redesigning/replacing your logo....i would use a realistic rendition of one though...i think that will serve you better...i think it'd look great as just black and white, or maybe go red and black if you want some color with it....just a thought...

Thanks for all the feedback!
I guess I shouldn't type the way I think, because it doesn't seem to translate well. LOL
I didn't really mean to say we didn't put any thought into the initial logo. I just meant that we could have been more creative with the text, etc.
As far as the colors go, I did start in black and white, hence the black and white renditions in the image. I guess that didn't come across clearly. I see what you're saying about the number of colors and printing costs.
As far as the lighthouse goes, we didn't want to use a real lighthouse because we didn't want to make a connection between our company and any lighthouse in particular. We only wanted a very simplistic design that symbolizes a lighthouse. Kinda like a stick figure represents a person. Does that make sense? Sounds like we missed the mark on that one at any rate. And, LOL @ it looking like a bowling ball on top. I never saw that until now!
Again, thanks for all the comments and suggestions. I'm back to the drawing board!
