I'm doing a landscape tabloid layout in Quark and would like to create guides by using the columns function. For some reason, i can't remember how to do this, can anyone out there help.
thanks,

Put your cursor on the ruler at the edges & click & drag the guides to where you want?

Open Quark. Go to File > New. It'll then ask you the size of the layout, margins, columns & gutter width. You can specify it there as well. But you won't be able to move your margins or columns once you specify it. You'll have to open a new document to do that and re-enter your settings. Using the guides are a little less "permanent", if things happen to change down the road in your layout, you can easily move them to where you like them. But if you want the margins & columns to be "standard" in whatever you're doing, then for sure use the "File > New" option. It's less hassle and tamper free when moving things around in your layout.

I wish quark had a "clear guides" feature...makes re-sizing the document less of a mess.
Mr. Yoakam, what font program are you using..extensis?

Mr. Magnus: I don't know from font programs. I am using quark5 and can't get access to the bulk of fonts on mac. It must be a very simple process like sliding the fonts from one folder to another but I can't find any info anyplace.

I know on my system I'm using a program called extensis suitcase...it basically activates all the fonts being used by quark and any other of my programs. It has full access to my "font folder" on my computer. It will activate and deactivate fonts as I need them...
Check to see if you have Adobe font manager....you basically need some type of bridge between the fonts in your system folder and the ones quark has access to. Did you try the "Help" menu in Quark, or on your MAC OS?

Quark 6 has a clear guides feature.
utilities > guide manager > There you can add, remove or lock guides.
I wish they would let you adjust the margins, I never use them anymore because I cannot adjust them later if needed.

I don't have Quark 5 loaded on my Mac, but here's my guess. Quark 5 is a classic application and is most likely only accessing your fonts in your "classic" system folder. So, any fonts placed in your OS X system library are not going to show up.

You can change your margins after they are set by going to your Master Page, then use your "Page" menu on the menu bar and scroll down to Master Guides. ;)

i ended up just doing it the manual way; dragging/dropping guides in position. thanks for the info regarding setting up margins in the new doc dialog, will use for sure in the future.
