It was awesome that was the first day we got into the water. It was Saturday morning and the water was like glass. The fog was awesome, I had to take a few shots. We stopped at a park near Duluth on the way back and I'll post some of those also.

Turtle shot was hairy, my dad pointed it out as we were going past it. I told him I needed a shot of it. He backed up as I unpacked my camera and got it all dialed in. By the time I got the shot of the turtle was well aware of my ruse. It started to jet and I ended up with an action shot instead of it sunning itself. As I was putting my camera away we almost ended up in the rocks. My dad wasn't happy, but I didn't want to risk losing my camera or having it end up wet.

The fishing was not so great. I paid $18 to catch one small mouth bass that wasn't even a keeper. This was the first and prolly last fishing I did of the season, ick. I had too many weddings, including my own. We had three bass that we keep over night to eat the next day, but they were was only a half of one left when we woke up the next morning. We didn't even eat any fish in the BWCA :( Fall fishing is alot harder then spring fishing as we have found out.

Very nice shots Mynock - it's pretty hard to mess up a good sunset over a lake picture... not saying you dont have some great shots, it's just I took about 25 of a sunset a few weeks ago and I just cant seem to find a bad out of the whole lot of 'em.
I really like the Rock in the weeds picture - cool clouds!

I spent 4 nights and 5 days in this tent for the boundary waters. We had 6 portages and 4 beaver dams to cross. Portages were 3, 10, 12, 60, 80, and 240 rods which we all double portaged. 240 rods is 3/4 of a mile. Done with 40lb backs on back. It was the last portage on the way in and first on the way out. Yeah! 5 hours to portage in and 4 on the way out. Totally we covered about 7 miles from where we went in to where we put up camp. We did it over Memorial day weekend, and it was horrible weather. It was rainy, windy, and cold all but like 24 hours. Friday was nice and the weather on the way out was nice. We spent a few hours in our tent out of the rain. We ended up catching 4 walleyes, 2 northern pike, and 3 largemouth bass. We didn't eat the bass, but the other fish were tasty.

Beautiful shots, Mynock.
What advantages are you finding to shooting in Raw format? I have the capability for that on my camera, but I haven't studied up on it very much yet. I'm kind of a novice photographer, learning as I go.

It's just like it sounds Raw. It makes the most basic file possible. It's the raw data not turned into jpg or tiff or something else. It allows you the most control. It also produced larger files. It allows you alot of control once you get inside of Photoshop. You are limited on what you can do with it. I don't know if you can open them in older version that CS2. You can order any prints out of raw. It's putting a step that the camera normally does. You take your RAW file and then turn it into whatever format you want tiff or jpg or other. I think I explained it throughly, otherwise read below or just google it. I love the controls. I post up a screenshot here in a little bit.
http://www.luminous-landscape.com/tutorials/understanding-series/u-raw-files.shtml:
Reasons to Shoot Raw
— A raw file is comparable to the latent image contained in an exposed but undeveloped piece of film. It holds exactly what the imaging chip recorded. Nothing more. Nothing less. This means that the photographer is able to extract the maximum possible image quality, whether now or in the future. A good analogy with the traditional world of film is that you have the opportunity to use a different type of developer or development time at any point in the future if one comes along that you think might do a better job of processing the image.
— Raw files have not had while balance set. They are tagged with whatever the camera's setting was, (either that which was manually set or via auto-white-balance), but the actual data has not been changed. This allows one to set any colour temperature and white balance one wishes after the fact with no image degradation. It should be understood that once the file has been converted from the linear space and has had a gamma curve applied (such as in a JPG) white balance can no longer be properly done.
— File linearization and colour filter array (Bayer) conversion is done on a computer with a fast and powerful microprocessor. This allows much more sophisticated algorithms to be used than those done in a camera with its slower and less powerful processor and with less space for complex conversion programs.
— The raw file is tagged with contrast and saturation information as set in the camera by the user, but the actual image data has not been changed. The user is free to set these based on a per-image evaluation rather than use one or two generalized settings for all images taken.
— Possibly the biggest advantage of shooting raw is that one has a 16 bit image (post raw conversion) to work with. This means that the file has 65,536 levels to work with. This is opposed to a JPG file's 8 bit space with just 256 brightness levels available. This is important when editing an image, particularly if one is trying to open up shadows or alter brightness in any significant way.
Figures #1 and #2 below shows why. Assuming for this example a 5 stop dynamic range, you can see how much data is found in each of the brightness levels in the image. In other words with a 12 bit file the two darkest levels of the file combined have some 384 brightness levels to work with.
— An 8 bit JPG file on the other hand has considerably less. Both the sRGB and Adobe RGB colour spaces use a gamma 2.2 encoding. Gamma encoding reallocates encoding levels from the upper f-stops into the lower f-stops to compensate for the human eye's greater sensitivity to absolute changes in the darker tone range. Therefore an 8 bit JPG file has just 47 brightness levels available in the bottom two stops. (The remaining levels out of 256 are for the f-stops beyond the 5 in this example).

This is what dialog you get in Photoshop CS2 when you open a raw file. Notice all the bells and whistles. Might be a little overwhelming, but it can add some pop to your photos or just more control than you could hope for.

I've actually worked with Raw files, I've just never shot them myself. That post right before the screenshot was very informative, thanks. I didn't know that about the white balance, for example.
Definitely bears experimenting with while I'm out and about practicing. I know they're larger files, but I have a fairly decent sized (1 gigabyte) card, plus a half-gigabyte card in addition to that.
Those are stunning photos. Reminds me of my many trips there fishing and picking blueberries. Yum.

Me too! I've been working with more and more Raw files at work, and it's pretty impressive what you can do before you even bring it into Photoshop. I didn't know exactly how it worked though, things like white balance and exposure not being part of the original data. That's pretty cool.

I'm hear to educate. It's tricky though each company handles thier raw files differently.
Reasons to Shoot JPG
— Files are smaller and therefore more of them fit on a card.
— For many applications image quality is more than sufficient (family snapshots, news images).
— Small files are more easily transmitted wirelessly and online. This is important to newspaper photographers.
— Many photographers don't have the time or inclination to post-process their files.
— Many cameras (especially digicams) can not shoot quickly when working in raw mode. Some lower-end models can't record raw files at all.

So if you're doing candid shots or something you have to buzz some shots of quickly probably don't want to use raw or even the larger formats as the camera will take longer to process the picture. Your time between photos will increase as your quality/size. I was taking a picture of a sunset so I had alot of time to set up the shot.
