I'm starting my freshman year of college next year as a Graphic Design major. I'm looking to purchase a new computer. I'm slanting towards a laptop (Dell Inspiron 9100) for a number of reasons - compatability and transport - as opposed to a hefty desktop.
My only issue really with a laptop is battery life. If I'm spending more than 6+ hours on a project, I don't want my battery to give out on me.
So what do you all suggest?
WarmingTheCurb, welcome to the forum. Most of the time spent working on your laptop will be spent near some power. You shouldn't have a problem. You'll just have to limit your 'out under a tree' sessions to less than 6 hours. Or buy another battery. :)

My advice to you is to check with the college art department. Many of them require an Apple. They will tell you the horsepower you need to accomodate the software/projects etc.
I have the 17' Apple and never use the desktop computer.
we are looking to buy a 15' powerbook for my wife. We like to geek out in front of the TV- tough to do that with the Desktop unit int he office.

I also have a 17 powerbook and I use if for everything I do as a freelance graphic designer. The only thing I do, is hook up the laptop to my 21 inch crt monitor for photo color correction.
Get a laptop for college and get a Mac Powerbook! that way you won't have to wait for a computer in the lab!

Ah.....I'm a GD major. I will tell you that your best bet is a Powerbook, anysize. I started out with my desktop (Dell), but as I got farther along, i realized I needed a mac, so Now, 3 qtrs away from graduating, I still have my dell, but I also have invested in a powerbook. I use my powerbook more, it great and I have never had any problems with it. Its a great investment for school, and as a student, you'll get a discount on it too.

Not to hijack the thread here but I am thinking about getting a Dell. Not sure if I want a desktop or a laptop...but getting a Dell. Ok well I would love to have the laptop actually...LOL...but I haven't totally decided on either. My PC is getting up there in age...time to get a new one.

(not to hijack a hijacked thread but.. well, ok, I am. Maybe. Depends on if anyone replies, really, so it isn't me that hijacks it, it's you! Mwhahahahahahahahahahaha!)
Hey DZ, why are you thinking about a Dell? I know next to nothing about buying behavior but you seem set on them, so I'm curious. I'm always looking for new insights.
And she's not the only one that can answer, I'd love to hear from everyone on this.
i use an iBook for my GD. I started College this yr for GD and its helped me out in school since we use macs in school :)
i also have a Custom Built Desktop PC (mainly for gaming) but will have Illustrator, Photoshop and others on there..
I think since ur in school the laptop would be really handy.. u can take it to ur class if need be, I did that twice this semester.. and I plan on getting a desktop Mac when i get my Associates. (or if i get a banginass job before then and can afford one, but right now my Computer debt is at about 5k, bad habit of buying computers).. and possibly a new lappy when i have my associates. :) I try to keep business (pleasure) and more (non business) pleasure on different computers.. but having the iBook i tend to use that more then my PC

Dude.. i have a dell.. :D
they are pretty good.. never had a big prob. I heard the Tech Support is startin to suck on em.. (that i dont know personally) but its goin to my Dad for Xmas.. i moved onto bigger badder machines.. :)
I would reccomend! everyone i know who has em is happy with them..
Compaq, HP, Gateway... ppl just dont seem as friendly to for some reason.. i guess thats why i levitate torwards a Dell.. Consumer Reports also said how Gateway was sucky.. yadda yadda. So thats y i would goto a Dell..
I did get a Sony Viao once.. they are cute.. but thats about it.. Cute.. My viao is all apart because the fan is busted and somethin else.. Still works but its in bad shape.. So dont go Viao..
My mom had a compaq.. that thing just like died outta no where.. I finally threw that tower away a few mths ago.. I never personally liked compaq..
there are my opinions on PCs lol..

Dell has alwyas had great costomer service with me. We have 4 in my family and they have replaced a video card and monitor with no hassle at all. this was within the last 3 years and now i build my own comps (err have a friend as he teaches me). if you do go with a store bought, go Dell.
