I was looking forward to a quiet evening of repose to recharge from the day. I should have never turned on the evening news!

First there are still the stories of Hurricane Katrina evacuees and how they are coping and trying to move forward.

Second Hurricane Rita has now become a Category 5 storm with 165 mile an hour sustained winds with a bead on Galveston, Texas. Lessons from Katrina have over 1 million Texans heading inland. And unbelievably, tropical rains and waves from Rita’s outer bands can still impact New Orleans because the levees are not yet repaired and as little as 3 inches of rain could compromise the already stressed levee system. I worry for my cousin Mike and wife Petra who live on Padre Island.

Third, it is 7:35 CST and an airplane from JetBlue with 139 passengers is making an emergency landing because it’s landing gear is stuck with the nose landing wheel is at 90° askew from normal and the jet is in peril as it cannot fly to it’s New York destination and it cannot land. They have dumped their fuel and will attempt a landing at LAX any minute now. This reminds me of the Sioux City emergency landing of a DC-10 back in the 80’s where the jet landed and then skidded and rolled and burst into flames. It is now 7:47 cst and they are scheduled to land at 7:50 cst. I am praying for the crew and passengers.

Fourth, Minneapolis-St Paul is in the path of a tornado that is on the ground at Roseville and heading toward downtown Minneapolis and then Bloomington as the news stations show split screens to show the jet and the tornado. More cousin’s in peril, Debbie and Cindy live in St. Paul. And another tornado just sighted along the MN/WI border where cousin Lee lives. Aaaarrrggghhhh!

This is not what I call a relaxing evening!

time to call my dad, ive seen my fair share of tornadoes in MN, and luckily I wasn't anywhere close to them. the only one that scares me is the WI/MN border one, since my family lives in Woodbury, its awful close.

Lets just hope all of this bad shit turns out good eh Vicki

Well, some good news finally, they've called off the tornado watch and the only problem with the JetBlue flight is the gear. They've got full control over the control surfaces so they can make as gentle and slow a landing as possible. However, the plane with probably get written off :(

From the jabber on my aviation forum, A320s cannot dump fuel so they'll probably be up there for a while as they were fueled to go all the way to New York.

I was at LAX on Sunday too.

That massive storm front that is hitting MN seems to stretch as far down as Iowa (at least according to the weather channel about an hour ago). I lived in Iowa for 13 years, and I have yet to see a tornado **me knocking on as much wood as I can find**.

Good. I'm sure a lot of the people probably got panicked, but I was pretty certain that this was going to end A-OK.

I was left my house (savage, mn) at 6:30pm and headed North, into what looked to be the nastiest sky i'd seen all summer, I was in bloomington and the wind and sky went purple and green and insane!, then it was quiet for about an hour just some wind at most, then boom! thunderstorms for a few hours. I heard there were tornados touching down, but haven't heard of any major issues this morning. Its kind of funny how much people are paying attention to storms etc now. We usually have a good dozen or so nights like that a summer with no national news, but of course when i got home my uncle in Cali had left a message making sure we were ok from the tornado... maybe in some ways its good, making people more aware.

either way, summer sure did go out with a bang!

glad you're all ok! Great news about the JetBlue flight landing with no casualties.

Anyone in Texas or elsewhere in the path of Rita... if you are asked to evacuate in your area, please go! Better safe than sorry.

It *has* seemed like an awful lot of bad news lately. :(

Speaking of bad news, our gas has jumped 21 cents in two days after just dropping. It was $2.48 two days ago and today it's $2.69.

That it is. Better fill your tanks now, I'm getting reports that say gas will hit $5/gallon in Rita's wake.

If I didn't have to commute so far I would gladly walk or ride a bike. This gas price situation is bullsh't.

Gas is usually in the most expensive 10% nationally around here. It's not tooo bad, though, if you stop to consider what else you spend money on:

Anything from starbucks is like $80.00 a gallon.
Beer is close to 10 or 12 a gallon, I think.
Hairgel is about $160.00 per gallon.
Paint, nail polish, medicine, furniture wax, mustard, soy milk, etc etc. is all way more expensive than gas per gallon. No worries. It's just an expense you can not get away from (unless you have a hybrid, or whatever), so put it out of your mind. It's an unnecessary stress.

My .02 on gas. I just stopped looking at gas prices entirely.

^ Yea, but you dont load up on 15 gallons of that stuff at a time. The markup is 200-300% more on those items only because the unit price AFTER the markup is so minute, that no one cares.

However, even a slight fluctuation in higher dollar items reduces demand (i.e the monetary ABILITY for people to buy a certain product). Note that in economics, demand has nothing to do with the need to buy--it is only concerned with the ability.

In conclusion, Im gonna go buy a scooter.

When the average salary of the county & surrounding counties that you live in is $22,000 (I barely make that cut w/ two jobs), it's hard to ignore it. Especially when you commute as much as I do. I drive a regular ol' four door sedan and have to fill up two/three times a week. Then again, I can be pretty high strung and tend to worry over things outside of my control...I'm working on it though.

I must say rising gas prices have been keeping me fairly sober though, due to lack of alcohol purchases. That may be a good or bad thing.

sounds like a bad thing, reuber.

Well, to put things in perspective, we'll all most likely die when Yellowstone erupts. That'll make Katrina, Rita, and 911 look like an afternoon at 6-Flags. And you can't take it with you! Might as well spend it on gas.
