What is a slug, in reference to printing?

I don't recall what this is in reference to when it comes to printing. Sorry if it's such a newbie question, but it's better I ask and learn than remain ignorant. :)

In the newspaper biz the "slug line" is the abbreviate heading...we might put "Jaybird Story Here"....and "Jaybird" would be the slug for whatever the actual heading would be, for instance "Jaybird Holds Up Traffic Walking Across Busy Intersection"....then there are earlugs...but that's another topic.
