I was able to yahoo chat here at work just fine at the beginning of the week. I tried to get Adium and still can't get it to connect. I'm sure I'm up behind a firewall or something but just not computer savy enough to get a loop hole around it if possible. IT isn't a real big department here but i don't want to draw attention to myself. We had a big wig come in on Wednesday and I wonder if IT put up some kind of major internet lock. Any suggestion would be appreciated. I would like to be able to chat again at work.

Odds are they blocked the port that Y! uses. I don't use the actual Y! client but you could poke around and see if you can find out where the port can be changed. Can you sign into it at least?

I can only check email on the web which is a totally different port thing. I don't even know what to poke around and find. Some one suggested Adium. The only reason I'm partial to Y! is because that's what my wife uses at home and i want to be able to talk to her with out being verbal and look like IM on the phone for a long time. i just want to chat again

you're probably out of luck... unless you have a friend in the IT department. They usually dont give everyone access to those types of things. My IT department is pretty strict, they dont even let us download any thing, actually that's not true we can download them we just cant install them. Risk of viruses I suppose but it still sucks!
maybe this would work; try to log into yahoo chat (make sure to mute your speakers first) and have your wife IM you, then you can just minimize the chat and leave the IM open... or maybe even close the chat and just im... not sure how it exactly works?!

Odd because here half the company uses IMs of one type or another. But we're spread out all over the planet. We have to have something more immediate than email now and then, and phone can get up there in price.

Well I might be able to poke around. What would I be looking to see?

Well that's the problem, I don't have the yahoo client loaded to give you a guide, but basically you're looking for something that has Port: then a textbox with a number in it. it could be in tools or prefs or something along those lines.

Alternatively, try this http://e-messenger.net/

That's web based, hooks to MSN, AIM, and Y! and I don't think you'll find it blocked.

somewhere in the proxies under connection settings... not exactly sure though?
they may just flat out block the port you need... then unless you have admin privies you're not going to be able to do anything...

Well see it if works for you 1st. I managed to use it here the other day. Since it's http proxy based, I don't think any blocked ports will affect it. Of course if they know you're using it, they can block access to the site altogether.

Right the only thing I'm worried about is giving up the password. I hope it didn't just bend me over to spaminators.

Well I rarely use my yahoo mail, and I have spam filtering set to high on hotmail, so I wouldn't have noticed.

Thanks for the knowledge. It got me back a little comfort.
