Hi there im new to this site not sure if my question relates here. Im producing a magazine and was using my old Serif Pageplus to do it to begin with and have now installed Publisher 2000 which is what I used to use at my old job. However im having issues with transparency. I have create a logo and on Serif I could click transparent and I could place the picture over a background photo without a white backround and box.
I copied and pasted my transparent picture to Publisher and it has a white background and box and looks daft. I tried putting it into a picture frame and well, im not up on this so any help anyone can give me would be much appreciated.
Thanks,
Many Blessings
Kelly x
I'm not familar with Publisher but look for two things. A box that says something about runarounds or a clipping path.

Welcome to teh forums. ;)
I agree w/ DefJoe and 3howards... if you can, by all means ditch Publisher. If you can't, please do alert your printer that you're using Publisher...

Hi well at the moment I have very little choice at the present time. I have serif and Publisher and as much as my intention is to use Quark Express when the project is fully established through funding streams I have to use this programme.
If anyone knows Publisher even if you think it sucks lol!! let me know if you know how to make my picture transparent.
Cheers

Shining4, welcome to the forum. You are gonna love it when you finally get a real program. You need to right click on the image and then select properties. This will bring up a ton of options. I'm pretty sure you can set a clipping path. Dig around in there and see if you can come up with something that works. /emoticons/cool.gif

Hi Kool cat,
I tried right clicking in the programme like I did in Serif on properties and their wasnt an option? there was on Serif and I could tick transparent.
Oh well bummer!
What programmes do you guys use? im creating a 44 (22 page) sides full colour magazine and its my dummy im doing at present to go off to funders so that we can then get the better programmes and pcs.
Thanks

There's really only one choice Adobe Creative Suit. It's all you will ever need at least for print design. Quark is a fine program but it costs almost as much as the whole creative suite and you will still need the adobe products.
Keep messing around in those properties. I can't remember how I did it but I know I did. I only use publisher when some evil client gives me a pub file.

this might help,
in microsoft programs you would work in rgb and create alpha channels for transparency. save it as targa or tif files

found it first hit with a Google search. Good luck.
Kool, I can't believe you can even print with that program. I can't imagine the hoops. Everything I read on Microsoft's Publisher site is COMPLETELY the opposite of how production files should be set up. Imagine recommending TrueType over Postscript fonts!!! What a disservice that program is to the corporate world.
PrintDriver is a large format digital print dude. His advice/opinions may not apply to the 4color/offset/web world of printing

it is more appropriate for the secretary in the office to print newsletters from the inkjet/laser. not for commercial printing. but people still buy into it, i think b/c of the name mostly and some of its claims.

Well thanks everyone will check out your suggestions this afternoon.
For the record I wouldnt choose Publisher this is merely all I am able to use resource wise at present until funding comes through to get a better programme, new PC, Printer etc etc and then it will be going off to a professional printers.
Cheers again

i know you wouldn't have chosen publisher, sometimes we get off on a tangent and it's easy to do with publisher as the subject.
Is the graphic grouped with anything else? If so un-group it and you should be getting properties.

Hi Kool,
No its not grouped with anything else and still no properties option. Properties option on Serif not on Publisher.
Will check again (grin)

Okay at the risk of boring all you experts silly I have tried to remove the background in Paintshop Pro 8 I removed it and then when I tried to save it it said 'Because of the limitations of the specified file format (and possibly save options you've selected ), the saved file will be limited to a merge file' Then when re-opening it the darn white background from hell was back arrrgh!! Also tried saving as TIFF file (not that i know what it is just tried it for the hell of it lol!!)
Now I feel kinda dopey on this site as many of you seem to know what your doing and I dont lol im merely playing around and trying to work my way around new programmes.
So, if anyone knows what I need to do to change this I appreciate your help, if its too much to ask lol!! simply ignore me (grin)
Love, light and laughter
