How would you percieve this?

Im new to the forum, but have been studying Graphic Design for around 6 years.
I am in the middle of doing a degree right now, but due to ill health i have to work from home for the foreseeble future. I am sent breifs by my tutorsr.
I recieved a brief today and after reading it, it sounds interseting and i can't wait to get started on it. But theres parts im unclear on. I think I get the 'grasp' of it but would like to know what/how you percieve it. (i miss my classmates and the debates we all use to have) thankyou loads for anyhelp given..
and i believe you lot over the next few months will be my new colleagues if you dont mind:) :D

Brief:

Select a character from western Literature and reinvent it.
Update its context to present day, or some far flung future.
You must change its existing visual language - how it was originally drawn and redesign it, using a different autographic language.

Your image which contains at least two contrasting autographic elements.
This project is about exploring and experimenting autographic media.

This project has two main elements

one

Character Design and an awearness of its historical precedents

two

It is about how we convey ideas & concepts through autographs -
autographic drawing is about producing a personal signature, when we make an image.
This can often be determined by our choice of media and in very subtle cases - how we hold a pencil.
Concider the emotional inpact certin marks have.
Particular autographs hold us on a page for longer.

Autographic? As in Character portrayal? Like an Illustration in, say, a Dickens' story or Alice In Wonderland?

Oooo. FUN! My kinda project.
That's what I see anyway.
But the part about your image containing 2 contrasting autographic elements throws me. Do you choose one character and show two contrasting images or go for the easy one, Dr. Jekyll/Mr. Hyde?

"Murdoc is based on Kieth Richards and Scooby Doo" - Murdoc from the A-team. I can just picture PD saying, "I love it when I plan comes together" Then you guys make some supped up banner that kicks all the bad designers butts and PD has cigar in his mouth.

I'm really confused but what you have to do. Bring 2 western characters together and make one futuristic/alternate view? Too abstract for my brain on a Tuesday

hmm,
wow you've confused me loads - i was under the idea that it was about signature artists - say like, the way you can instantly tell a HR Gigar peice (organic machines) or a David Carson for his layout, then, say drawing Alice in wounder land like she's been drawn by HR Gigar.
this equals 2 elements NOT characters (???) you have to make the illustration reconisable as alice....but also that its been made by HR Gigar.

That make sense?

and the murdoc thing ive looked up...
its a character (bassist) from famouse pop band The Gorillaz...and the person saying the kieth richards this is Jamie Hewlett - who designed them and also did Tank Girl.

does mine sound right???
