A client has asked me for the CMYK values of two multi-colored background images. Can I do this? One background is a papyrus like paper and the other is a mountain range. What is it, an average of each area? Help!

im getting errors on both of your images.....maybe try re-uploading them.
the question makes no sense, those are multicoloured images, they wouldn't have a single defining value? and they aren't made up of just tones of single colours so that doesn't work. can you clarify alittle more ?

Last I checked Pantone doesn't have a PMS PapyrusC...
But they do have a PMS Quark Green...

In photoshop you can sample colours of a 5x5 pixel average. With the colour sampler tool, you can take upto 4 readings of colour areas (upto 5x5px each), then you can average them out yourself.
Hope this helps

I'm just looking for other opinions, but I'm going to tell them this.

Are they just looking for a color for a frame paint or matte color or something?
That we do all the time. But we do it from a print and a chipbook. The Photoshop sample method isn't always so accurate that I would stake a $1000 paint job on it.

You could always print out a detailed report that lists each pixel in the image, its location, and its CMYK breakdown. Thats only a few hundred pages of information probably.
Or you could tell them:
C = $67.00/gallon
M = $67.00/gallon
Y = $67.00/gallon
K = $70.00/gallon
Do they have a sense of humor?

I'm sure it's their printer who is telling them to do this. They're a marketing firm and have never asked me for what they really want. I'll ask for their printer's number and see what it is they really mean. This firm always asks for one thing and complains that they meant another. Once, they were trying to line up a series of labels on an ink jet print sheet and kept calling, telling me that my design was sized wrong and could I come over (30 min.) to fix it? (I try and try to get them to use my FTP site for file transfers, but they always insist it is broken, regardless of the countless friends and family who use it every day) Anyway, I drove over and hit their "left" key three times, problem solved.
