I was hoping you would be able to answer a few questions? I would really apprichate it as it is something Im having difficulty in finding out about.
I was wondering if you could tell me more about the importance ofgood graphic design for a business and the effects that good graphic design has opn business etc... Also a little about your background, and what you do in reflection to your points you have been making.
Kind Regards, Look forward to hearing from you
Hi IanCussons, welcome to the forum. Please don't double post, it gets confusing when multiple threads of the same topic are running. I deleted your duplicate post. http://home.comcast.net/~rnick9/koolsmiley.gif

Good graphic design commands the attention of the target audience and clearly conveys the intended message - whatever that may be. Bad design is hard to notice and doesn't get the intended message across when it is noticed.
I got a BFA with an emphasis on bronze sculpture, then went back for an associates degree in graphic design, and have now been designing professionally for 5 years. I've got the artistic ability to make things look nice, which helps in graphic design, but I feel pretty strongly that graphic design is more about technical execution and adherence to a relatively strict methodology of creating designs. True Art belongs in museums and galleries. The concept that graphic design is a subjective process, much like a painting which develops slowly over time, and is only done when the painter "feels" its finished - is a false concept. There is a large amount of objective information available which can be applied to creating designs which accomplish clearly defined goals. This is not to say that subjective, epheremal processes have no place in graphic design - they do. But I believe the role they play in design development should be limited at best.
Design is a mixture of science and art. The primary goal of any business is to make more money than it spends. To this end, good graphic design should help businesses make more money. Placing an emphasis on a scientific, objective approach to graphic design makes it easier to draw the line between a good design and increased profits as a result of that design.
Wadd'ya think?

I wholeheartedly agree.
However, good graphic design does not always imply effectiveness and surprisingly, sometimes bad design manages to pull in results too.
This makes justifying the extra money for good designs even harder. I think that a lot of the large corporations completely understand and embrace the need for superior design. Its the small to mid size ones that are the hardest to convince.
