I'm preparing to do a redesign for the magazine I design (redundant, I know) in order to accommodate a space for a mailing label. While I am looking at other respectable magazines to see how they configure things, I was wondering if you all had any thoughts on this.

I haven’t spoke with the publisher in depth yet to find out how he plans on having these mailed. When we talked briefly, he was leaning more towards just creating a blank space on the front cover so that addresses could either be printed, pasted, or a general address or postal remark could be made. He is not, I’m almost sure, planning on bounding the magazine in any way and would like to keep his costs down on them mailing side of it as much as possible. It might also be good to note the trim size of 8.5 x 11.

With that said, do you all have any suggestions or personal preferences when it comes to the placement or design of something like this? I’m sure I’m over-thinking this, but find it’s always good to ask. Any tips you have are welcomed! Thanks.

I personally prefer to put the mailing address on the back. The front cover is prime real estate to showcase and sell the magazine. I would give the mailing label maybe 2 1/2 inches at the bottom. The rest is Prime ad space to help pay for the magazine.

The only problem is if the magazine has an advertisement on the back. Back page advertisements are always the most expensive and an advertiser would not allow their space to be constricted by a mailing label (which is why most major magazines put the label on the front).

Besides, if the person is subscribing to the magazine chances are they're going to read it anyway. You don't have to sales pitch them as much if they've already paid to read the mag.
