I just graduated from art school. I am stressed about the whole finding a job process. I have a couple of questions that I am sure some with experience could easliy answer.

1. Do I have to move to NYC. I really don't want to live there, but I feel like if I get a job at a place with a name, it could really start my career off in the right direction. However, I really don't want to live in the city...I think it intimidates me and I'm scared to do it alone. My first choic is to work at JDK in Burlington, VT which is a perfect place for me.

2. I am getting slides and 4x5's taken of my work, but what else should I have? What do employers want to see.

3. Any other words of wisdom?

Thanks.

Stacy

I would make a portfolio site and start sending out resumes, cold call, join the AIGA...call everyone in the phone book....

your link didnt work to your site.....

commarts.com has a good bit of jobs check there.

different jobs are going to want to see different things....some people only might need to see web work etc... just call around and ask....

print out your best 10 works.... have a multi page layout..have an AD type of work a couple logos....maybe a flyer...

you just want to show everything you can do... promote your strong points....

you might have to start low, as in don't have this preconception that you're going to get your dream job. let's face it, you don't have real workd experience. big perm has some good suggestions.

yeah, what 3howards said.

Everyone expects that once they graduate they are going to work for a place with a 'name' but you aren't going to get in the door at a 'name' unless you have at least 3 to 5 years of experience in the field and a kickass book (or are in some way related to the owners...).

Didn't you do any internships?
What work are you getting slides of? Art? Or computer files made into slides?
Do you mean 4x5 chromes? Wasteful if they aren't going to an image broker. Or do you mean 4x5 postcards?
What are you going to do with the slides and 4x5's?
Can't look at them during a job interview.

Big Perm's advice is good and it worked for him. And go back to the advice we gave you almost a year ago. It hasn't changed.

PrintDriver is a large format digital print dude. His advice/opinions may not apply to the 4color/offset/web world of printing

Expect to work cheap! Expect to do crap! your a college grad, in the design industry, unlike a 'regular' college grad no one wants to hire you! This place you want to work at... don't count on it, unless they have a production artist job doing change outs. That's what you will be looking at.

Reality will hit you soon.

maybe make a cd-rom of your portfolio to bring in too....
but its also always good to carry around your real portfolio too, especially in NYC, you never know who you could run into....
i met this one designer that used to goto my school, he flew upto NYC for a week to look for a good job, he ended talking to a guy on the subway and the guy asked he could look at his portfolio... little did the designer know that this guy was a CEO at ESPN, and then offered him a job right then and there, talk about being in the right spot at the right time!
