Ok, a little back story...

I went on a job interview recently for a local Alphagraphics. They were needing a lead designer, as their current designer is not good at all. According to the manager I interviewed with, she shows up sporadically at best, does sub standard work when she does any at all, and is rude to customers and co-workers. Well, he proceded to show me a logo that she did that she charged the customer $1000 for. Allegedly, this logo took 8 hours to do and she was supposedly REALLY proud of it. Well, I guess the customer took the proof sheet, and were never heard from again.

Fast Forward a week or so...

I'm working at a small-time screenprinting/embroidery shop. I'm going through some old files and run across a file for this company. Curious, I open it up, AND IT'S THE SAME LOGO!!!! The one the customer "didn't like". My boss said that they came in with this on a piece of paper and asked them to reproduce it for them, since they had "lost" the original file.

I thought this was hilarious as hell. I'm debating telling the Alphagraphics manager about this, even tho he didn't hire me. What do y'all think i should do?

oh yeah if you wanna see this masterpiece, here's a link (http://66.77.176.5/yellowpages/gif/10/1077_1823_303120498_1067.jpg)
the logo is the upper half of the ad, above the list. ;)

I would, but I don't know it that's the professional thing to do. Designers have to look out for designers. Like that whole logoworks thing.

I would, it would be worth it just to know that "Fast Suckers" had to pay $1k for it :D

If I was the client I wouldn't pay 1k for that horrible thing, but then I wouldn't then take it to someone else to get it recreated.

Offer to redesign it into something that doesn't make people want to vomit.

Fee? $500.

Some people are idiots... they like that kinda stuff, But obviously they didn't think it was worth 1k either since they stole it.

That's correct. They spent days working on that lolli pop knowing that each day the price for this sucker is climbing and then got out in a panic.

I have to say that that logo licks salty balls, but I don't think that makes it ok to rip it off. Regardless of the merit of the thing it is still someones work/idea and theft is theft, turn the buggars in.
Then secretly send them a quote to do a better logo for them.

yeah, to settle this, I would give the original designer a lollipop as compensation for her efforts, then I would threaten to sue the company for trying to tie another company into a theft scandal... then charge them $5k to redesign it (and stay quiet)

here is the email I sent.
Rocket, no sadly this is a case of a designer not knowing how to use her tools. (specifically, AICS2)

Hello Sir,

My name is Dane Ault. You and I had a meeting last Tuesday about the
possibility of me coming to work with you. This, as much as I am
curious, isn't about the outcome of that meeting.

This is in regards to a piece that you showed me that was a "showcase
piece" for your current/last designer; the 'Fast Suckers' logo. I
remembered you telling me that not only did the customer not like it,
they stomped off with the proof sheet, and never paid you for time
spent. Well, in the interim, I've taken a temporary job at a small
company, doing t-shirts. In the course of this job, I found a file
labeled 'Fast Suckers'. Curious after our meeting, I opened it. And
there was that logo. I don't pretend to know how or why said logo
would end up at this shop for embroidery work, but it did end up here.

A quick google search shows that the company is using this logo freely
in all manners of promotion. As a fellow professional graphic
designer, and regardless of whether I got the job or not, I could not
stand idly by, while an unscrupulous company is screwing (for lack of
a better term) a fellow professional by using a piece that they have
no legal right to.

I thought you should know. If there are any steps to be taken, I wish you luck.

Thank you,
Dane Ault

That really is something to be proud of - not making the logo, but charging 1K for it.

Man, that's so horrible, its too easy to make fun of.

If that logo drums up business I will faint - but then it is memorable....when you need sewage sucked up, think of crap! Maybe you get what you (don't pay) for.

That sounds like logical advice, until you consider... Would YOU do a job for a company you know is in the business of ripping off designers? Not to mention one with extremely bad taste?
