I prefer the bottom one. IMO, the one on the top is cliche.

Let me preface I love the name, your last name is very...I dont know how to say it, has a nice ring to it.
Hockley Creative...is very nice indeed.
Now I'm guesssing you made a ton of sketches, or worked out a group of ideas in illy, would you mind showing us some of the previous work in progress, I just want to see more of the creative thinking to provide input.
The black and deep yellow is a cool color combo as well, I kind of enjoy it, not used to often and its kind of fresh and exciting to me at least.
I think as far as symbols go this currently looks a little...corporate like a stock trading company. I understand your looking at a design of "improving, upward facing" but I think maybe a more abstract take might be in order? Consider the creative process you know the concept, lets expand on ways to show that concept.
One thing that would strike me as interesting is one of those old drawn hands that is pointing in a direction, maybe an upwards 45 degree angle.

on the bottom ones, you had a cool rythmic thing going on with your text where each of the letters in "creative" fell between the spaces of "hockley" THAT I liked. the marks, not so much. one looks like a "K" the other looks like an "S". Neither have anything to do with your name. the square is cliched i'd lose it altogether. I might take the rythmic text and the upward arrows and play with those together. ;)
What is the concept behind "b"? I like the look of that mark, but I don't really get it -- its it a squished "S" or a feather?
I see what you're trying to do with the kerning, but I don't think it's working -- it gets a little confusing. It wants to be a checkerboard pattern but then ... not so much.
Unc mentioned the psychology of color earlier, and to me -- this reads "warning sign" I love me some orange and gray, so I'm not sure why this isn't quite right for me. Maybe try it a little more muted? Just a thought. This is my personal opinion so take it for what it's worth. ;)
Also, you know the old story about printing Orange as a process color, right? Just wanted to check to make sure. It can be tricky. (I learned this the hard way with my first identity)

careful too, because orange and black can look too "Halloween-y"
ok, heres new concept.
new colors (less haloweeny) kinda high-tek/fresh look and i thought the idea of a simple plain square fillled w/ a color would be kewl. but that diddnt work, so i added a "H" inside, and gave it a new look altogether.
so , lemme know if you think ;)
oh and i got a killa headache and its driving me NUTS!!! +.+

I have an idea for you that's golden and I want to see if you can't figure it out. There is a way with the arrows to use the negative space to form a letter. Guess the letter--win a prize! :p

The only things is, arrows are a touch cliché...

There is a point where you can take the cliche and make it classy. It's all in the hands of the person weilding the pen.
some more revisions (if you wanna call it that) basicly tried some different fonts/colors for the "h" in the square.

time for lunch i think (you ever find it hard ot take lunch when you designing?) hehe
ok, i been getting lot of critiques on how forum. and think i need to take a break and re-think things (cant rush in to this) and there is no hurry, I am being a lil foolish by trying to throw something together, cuz all i wanna do, is somehow get a few projects for other ppl i can work on, i feel i need a portfolio site ect for that >.<
i want exp, so therefore rushing in to makeing an online portfolio site/logo
im gonna forget about that for now, and focus on fundimentals, ill just learn stuff, and maybye if im lucky i can get the opertunity to help others out BEFORE i get my own portfolio site up and running, after all better to have a portfolio site that actually has CONTENT, hehe
maybye when i do some work for others, i will have a better idea of how i want to represent myself ;) just a matter of finding that all important experiance. any ideas? currently my only resource for Experience is www.worth1000.com anyways if anyone has any SMALL projects for me feel free to pm me, or e-mail : liamhockley@hotmaill.com
ps: heres what i told the Howeies
ok, well, i guess i have no choice but to take a break (month or two) and re-think things... if nothing i can do works, makes me wonder, if i will ever get anythgn that "works" i'm by no mean planning on "perfection" as i believe that is impossible, but something that "works" is my goal for now >.<
as for dav, only thing that made me pissed off at him, is when he started saying shiz like "lick my balls" im sure he would never say that to my face, so dissapoints me that he said it here...
anyways, consider this post obsolete and "cky" who are you on GDF??? JUST cusrious, or do you just read the posts on there.???

Liam,
not to fuel the fire, but in all honesty, there was some really good information given to you both here AND on HOW. Sure, they don't candy-coat their critiques like some of us do here, but the information is still valid.
I don't really see a concept behind the "square" - with or without the "H" in it.
Try this: brainstorm about your personality... who are you? what are you trying to represent with your mark? Try to take everything that you want to tell your customers and boil it down into a strong concept.
Make lists.
Look up the words on your lists in the thesaurus (www.thesaurus.com).
Refine the lists.
Then sketch - pages and pages of sketches. Anything that comes to mind. You don't have to show them to anyone if you don't think that they're good. Take the time to do this, and pick the best 5 or 6 and refine them.
Until you have something that is strong on paper, don't even touch the computer. Start with black and white. Color comes later.
Read this thread: Useful tips for developing logo design skills (http://www.graphicdesignforum.com/forum/showthread.php?t=11451).
Read up on typography. It is important!
Once you have done those things, THEN go to the computer.
Logo design is not easy - designers study it for years in order to create effective logos, although the general perception is that anyone with a computer can put something together, there really is a lot that goes into it.
Granted, designing for yourself can be much harder than designing for a client, but
until you learn how to do this properly, you really shouldn't advertise yourself as a "logo designer".
Why not volunteer your services to a non-profit organization like a church, youth group, animal shelter, etc and work with someone to create what they are looking for? It will give you first-hand experience in how to work with clients in addition to some practical design experience that you may be able to put into your portfolio.
ROFL
*wipes the tears from my eyes*
i read it all, but i need a break.
rejection is a hard thing to deal w/ i just need some breathing room,
ill work on flash, practicing animation and illustration, and see where that takes me....
and i listen to everytign that is said unless it is "lick my balls"
anyways, thx for the pointers, ;)

Liam, you seem to be getting more level headed...that's called growth, so congrats ;)
I'm curious - are you starting on paper? Someone had mentioned it and they were dead on the money. You can really flow w/ paper + pencil. When you start on the computer you usually move deep into the little details of an idea too soon while on paper you tend to get the big picture, then work out the details, resulting in a more effective design.
ffs, NO!!, I START ON MY SCETCHPAD!!!
but then take it to the computer, where i also get more ideas flowing....
anyways, just a question?
could it maybye be the "name" that hos no potential, as its hard ot associate a strong image with?
im gonna go back to brainstorming, but this time take words that could represent me and then go from there ;)

I find that starting with words can be very helpful. Hope it works for you, too!
ok, ill work on comming up w/ a new name (prefereley something that has a strong image associated e/ it, and that also represents me) and then maybye post something in about 2-4weeks, ;)
in the meantime, has anyone god any ideas where i can find "Creative" projects that i can use to "tune" my skills >.< since i need experience but since i dont work as a graphic designer, find it hard to find projects, (usually just do experiemnts or play w/ certian tools) would be nice to have a "fictional" project that "simulates" the real thing, kinda like worth1000.com, only worth1000 doesnt have very many contests and stuff running >.<

Look around your neighborhood for some really bad logos/flyers/advertising, pretend that they're a client and rework their image. I'm doing that now with a pet store called Lets Pet Puppies...everything they have is HORRABLE! When your done with your "project" you can even go up to the business and try and sell them the reworked logo etc. Sometimes they bite and you'll get paid.
I just ate Reese's Puffs for breakfast. The taste blew my mind! The chocolate and peanut butter swirling around titillating my taste buds. Sensory Overload!!! I suggest all of you pick some up next time you are at the grocery store. They were so good that I am going to rush to the kitchen eat another bowl right now!!! Thank you General Mills!!

We were out of them at my workplace! Dammit!!! Have to settle with Cheerios and about a cup full of sugar...nothing quite like the glucose quicksand at the bottom, though it sure is no Reese's Puffs.
