Photo to Cartoon

Does anyone have any tips or even possible Tutorials on converting a photo to look as if it was a cartoon or a comic book drawing? I've seen this technique used in a few places (mainly on TV) and I was curious to see how it was done.

take a photo, trace it with the pen tool in photoshop or illustrator or coreldraw...

I was just curious to see if there were any filter combinations in Photoshop that might have done it....

You can fake it in photoshop pretty quickly by using Filter>Artistic>Cutout
Use the highest number of levels and the least simplicity.
To smooth the edges, try using a guassian blur..and then an unsharp mask.
You'll have to play with those settings to acheive the look you want.

I've used the Poser Edges filter also on my photos, and have had ex girlfriends ask mewho drew the picture for me.

i usually start with a filter like cutout or posterize...whatever
then i go in and clean it all up by hand
