Hi all, not posted for ages, really AGES!!
Hope you are all well. Anyway I've not done anything too special but what do you think of this painted picture of Claire Danes... I'm curious to know if it looks like it's painted by hand, not by a computer?

If you did this yourself without using any filter effect of the Photoshop or any other softwares for that matter then this is really a work of art I must say:o

It's "painted" over the original photo in Photoshop, using various custom-shaped brushes and a lot of detailed spotting, the unsatisfying thing is you can create a similar "Effect" using some filters... but that would be against my reason for doing it, to see if I could "Paint".
The main thing was to create a proper brush-stroked oil-paint effect without using any of the rubbish photoshop "Artist" filters, which are completely false looking!

Looks pretty good.
While the Photoshop filters are a cheap way out, I think it should be recognized that a few filters here and there provide a good start to a professional effect. If it can save you time, the filter is worthwhile.

not bad. You may want to check out a few issues ago of Photoshop User. The cover has a painted photo portrait on it. It'll be right up your alley. Also Check out "Painter" and Cher Threinen-Pendarvis's books. You may also like Bert Monroy www.bertmonroy.com

the only painting i can do is in photoshop... as a kid in art class I would try to do those "shades" projects where you paint from stripes from black to gray to white in 10 stripes... mine would always be Black, Dark gray, Darker Gray, Gray, Dark Gray, Light gray, Dark gray, gray, lighter gray, white...
I could draw up a storm but painting was never my thing. but i guess that was also when i was 10...

It doesn't look painted at all, it looks like a photo of Claire Danes with a crystallize filter. How did you do the hair?

Is this the original image you painted over or is this the painting before using a filter? I still don't see how this is painting; it looks like a photo with some kind of filter, a few layer effects. If this is painted how did you do the hair?

what software did you use? Photoshop ? Or Painter ? Same question why do you consider it a painting rather than a digitally processed image ?

Welcome back red!
I don't think he once considered it a painting, but rather an emulation of one. His liberal use of quotes was the dead give-away for me. It's "like" a painting.
In any case, I'm just glad it's not another one of those damn grunge posters.

If Red Raw = Liam,
Red Raw + forum comments = Accepting crits responsibly and professionally
then Accepting crits responsibly and professionally = pshychotic responses, whining, threatening, name-calling, "C YA"s, and pithy attempts for martyrdom x 2 (for he'll post this twice, once here and once in HOW Forums).

Although they can be pretty damn harsh (they call it "constructive" criticism over there), you can weed out some pretty good advice. You just gotta filter out the unnecessary rudeness.
Unless you're Liam, then...well that's a different story.

btw, about rudeness ... it's practically impossible to avoid ryin's and davpunk's comments (they seem to live on the forum ) . and if those two guys for some reason don't like your work , there is noway you can get a constructive critique ... Shortly, "lick my balls" (by davpunk)..

This Liam sounds Lovely!!!
I've not had the pleasure of reading his threads yet, i'll take a look.
Oh and yes, it was never meant to "Be" a painting, but to give a look of a painted style but completely digitally.
I used Photoshop as I don't really like Painter, it's too fake.
The Hair is done by using a stipple effect Brush (self-made) and no brush spacing. You have to use very low opacity and a steady hand and just build and build until you have a "Textured" hair. You also have to blend colours to create the hair, skin and shading tones. It's just like painting, you have to have a base colour, then specular colours, then highlight colours, then shadow colours, then tones...textures...tints...variables... richness...etc etc etc
It takes about 2 weeks if you really try. I did many "Quick" versions of other pictures but they just don't look as good, you have to try.
