Hi all, I've been wandering around this forum for a while now trying to get ideas about what looks good as a logo, i'm starting a business from a very small amount of cash so pretty much everything is being done by myself including the logo (god help me :)).

At the moment this is the current/temp logo
http://www.graphicdesignforum.com/forum/attachment.php?attachmentid=1214&stc=1

I'm just unsure of it, it doesn't strike me as a memorable logo, but i'm stuck for ideas, anyone got any pointers (bad colours, bad design etc ),

Oh and the business is car tuning parts btw

Cheers Si

I don't know for sure what it is. I'm not really into car tuning and 'Modding' but this doesn't scream "Performance Car" to me.

I think the 'Online' part looks a bit stuck on, it might be better balanced if it was white writing in a blue rectangle the same width and colour as the bottom of the "Modit" word.

And is ti Mod It, or MODIT?

I like this more as it is modern and fast looking, like the cars...

This is what i was thinking but my skills in illustrator are basic to say the least :)

Tbh the 'online' bit was added later on, do you mean something like the 2 attachments?

And is it Mod It, or MODIT?

The company name is Modit but it is meant in the terms of "Modify It"

I like this more as it is modern and fast looking, like the cars...

I also like that as its simple and it doesn't take much thinking to realise its for the car industry, i was also thinking of having the Modit text over the top of a simple winding road but due to rubbish art skills I couldn't design one that didn't offend :D

This is what I meant with the Online bit... but i still think the whole idea might need work.

yeah i agree... i dont think it needs the black line between mod it and the box with online in, the box creates the separation now i think the line clutters it up a bit.

also 'modding' is quite an underground'ish cool thing... not sure if this logo is "street" enough, try giving it a bit more attitude, make it a bit more agressive and in your face, id possibly loose the blue gradient as well... makes it look a bit 1994

The jack is a bit cartoony for my liking too, also isn't modding all about nitros, huge rims and performance parts... you could have the 'i' as a suspension strut or keep the 'i' normal and swap the 'o' for a really nicley stylised alloy wheel, it's been done before but if you put a street edge on it maybe a bit of graf or something it might look pretty cool

I know exactly what you mean, i've no idea why the hell i went with a pump jack instead of a suspension strut (it all seems so obvious after someone else points it out:D ), but as for the cartoony(ish) style I quite liked that look and took my ideas from some of the jap tuners where the cartoon element is huge ( http://www.yashiofactory.co.jp/ ) and sets it apart from the european tuners who go for the more serious approach.

see what you mean... thats kinda cool, id still do it a bit more gritty and dark but thats just me, but seeing that it could work either way

I actually think YNOT's avatar and signature is spot on for the Tuned-car market... and it works perfectly with his work.

Maybe you need to be more "Artistically Modern", after all, isn't car modifying and art?

totally... it's got a 'tag' feel to it which would be nice for this project, this book is quite good for this sort of thing:

also take a peek at this guys work, go into 'productions' and check out some of the logos:

Very very impressive, I would love for my logo to have that style but like i said my ilustrator skills are so soo bad, think its time for me to get practicing

Quite like this site as well which is the underground style you were talking about

hey Cranky - sorry I haven't had much time to read over this thread - but you might want to read over this one:

for some more helpful tips.

its not so much the blue, its the gradient i think... i dunno, personally i think they are a bit 'done' but thats only my opinion :)

a logo for a company that sells car tuning parts needs to not obviously resemble but almost hint at (styling wise anyway) what it is selling and who its selling to, these cars are slick, cutting edge, full of state of the art tuning parts... basically they're pretty f***in' cool.

if i was doing this logo id be thinking cool, fast, underground, slick and street, and if i was gonna spend a load of my cash tuning my car i'd go some place that looked slick and professional.

I know where your coming from, but putting all those things into a logo is very hard (for me at least :) ) I like the idea of having a graffiti/underground style of font, but i'm stuck for simple ideas to add a car theme to it without it looking tacky or looking like i'm advertising something other than car parts :(

consider designing it in straight black and white first and be sure that it is still readable at about 1 inch wide... you might find that helpful.

Cranky

Yeah thats another problem, if i go down the graffiti style fonts, things start to become a bit unreadable, like the M on Modit, its just not as clear as i would like

I'd start to play off the M in Modit, you could do something with that and make that into your logo, somehow incorporate the tire thing with with bird like M??? just a thought

Sweet...another car guy. Hmmm...I really like what you've got thus far, but it doesn't have too much of a 'car' feel to it. The style is 'tuner-ish', but it needs a bit more work.

How about making the letter I a strut? Tuners are all about lowering their cars and modifying it to handle like it's on rails.

Or maybe make the letter "O" resemble a turbocharger.

Also, I would lose the black horizontal line that separates modit and online.

Ooohhh, or you could make the D with dashes towards the end of it to make it resemble a tach.

That letter M is cool...maybe make your focus more on that...like and icon or something, and then just have the name be all spelled out underneath it.

Geez...the possibilities are endless here...my mind is going crazy with ideas.

Keep pluggin' man, you'll get there with a bit more effort, but I'm likin' where you're headed so far. I can't wait to see the next version from you.

Cranky

I'm just trying different fonts for the M as we speak, I don't really have the artistic skills to draw my own M, i've just given up tryin to draw a rev counter and thats only an arrow with some numbers :D

YNOT
11-10-2005, 05:10 PM
Ohhh...or a disc brake....make the letter 'O' a disc brake. Once you've got a fast car, you've got to be able to stop quick...right?

Cranky
11-10-2005, 05:21 PM
you really don't quite realise how pants I am at drawing :D

btw really nice website, thats what i was on about in the earlier posts about a more cartoonish look but still looking professional

I've added a few different M fonts plus a dodgey disc brake 'O' (tried and failed to draw it so modified some clipart :o )

distruktor

how about something like this... kinda on a tagging/fat rim tip, I've only drawn it pretty quickly just so you could get an idea of what i was babbling on about so dont treat it like a finished logo, more of a mac sketch...

anyway here you go:

Wow that looks stunnin, i just don't know how some of you guys can draw things like that
