Here is some artwork i've done for my brothers band: I can't decide between 1a and 1b. So i'd be happy with comments regarding the two, and any of the other pieces.
The band is in the style of Incubus/The Butterfly Effect and are influenced by Mudvayne so they are fairly heavy. The grungy style i believe is justified because it is a. what the client wants and b. the predominant style at the moment and c. reflects the type of music that they are playing.
They are going to be placed into a trifold cd slick and printed digitally (a 200 unit run)
The names of the songs are
#1 Bleeding on the wall
#2 Final Theory
#3 Fuel
#4 Waterfall
#1

nice work. i have some friends that opened for mudvayne this past summer.
i also like 1a &b but find the old english a little hard to read i never really like it except for maybe the first letter of a word with that said i think i like A better because it brings in a 3rd color . as far as the other pieces i like all of them but i'm not sure if i like them together. they seem to have a different feel. (maybe each of those songs has a differnt feel i guess i'd have to hear the corasponding songs) hope that helps

Yeah thats really the problem i'm having. I might post a mock up of the slick just to show them side by side. They do have a very different feel, so its bothering me a little bit.
Cheers for the comments.

i like 'a' because the red gives the piece a focal point. with 'b' we don't get that as much.

exactly.
i was also quite worried that b would be very distracting because the saturated red doesn't fit with the other pieces which all have very dull, unsaturated tones.
I'm glad you think that the red 'splodge' provides a focal point, that was the intention.
heres the outside: of the slick. I'm going to do somthing with the cover and the back cover. They don't fit with the theme of the other pieces. Originally i was going for the serene feel on the outside then like a ''violent storm' on the inside but they are too different

i might try some serious colour manipulation of the front cover, or some aging techniques, give it a different mood, and try to match the other art more.

this reminds me forcibly of feel-good christian music. not the vibe i think you'd want for this project. (unless you were being ironic...) mebbe duotoning it reddish-brown, and beating it up might help.

definitely 1a. for me. 1b. doesn't have the punch the 1a does. Plus the type (which I agree with vtwin_gary) is even harder to read in b. I do like the grunge here. It works well. But I would definitely work on making the type stand out more.
My favourite out of the inside lyric pages is #2. It has this grim feeling to it and your application of the lyrics is great. Is it a satellite image? also is it from a devastated city (hurricane perhaps)?
I think maybe you should stick to that look for the entire inside pages. That will surely give you the continuity you're looking for there.
I agree, while the serene front and a grim inside sounds intriguing it might not convey that message very well.
I think this says heavy dark band very well.
The background for #2 is actually just a concrete texture, although it does look like a lunar landscape. The illustrations are a set of brushes i picked up from photoshop brushes.com. They are blueprints of the first Tank ever made.
I'll post when i've done a bit of work on the cover.

I wasn't even thinking of the blue prints when I made that comment. Those did look like some sorta tech drawing to me.
But the brick wall, I could've sworn it was a satellite image of a city on a shore. The black areas being the water. The grey beying the land and the white spots being some sort of temprature map that imaging device (in this case I sattelite I thought) picked up.
wow. crazy. It still is my fav. though.
P.S. look at it like that and see if you see what I mean. The lyrics even make sense in that context. Pardon me, it's getting late here and I'm starting to hellucinate me thinks.
yeah it does look like a city. That gives me an idea for some new photoshop brushes...
I think this is the mood that i'm going to try for with the cover:

And that is one lovely cover!

Heres the updated cover:
Inspired by my old copy of Vitalogy

Heres the original cover picture:

Heres the new inside cover:
The original picture on is actually the same one. I just did a bit of creative photoshoping and came up with a different cloud. The reason for this is because
i got a really nice aged effect but i couldn't reproduce it properly (accidently deleted my working file )
Probly the thing i'm most proud of is the job on the photos. When we were doing a shoot in the recording session i took a photo of the cctv screen for the drum room, so thats what it came out like. The other photos are photoshopped to look like the original photo of the drummer.

The song artwork: (can't decide if they're final or not), very heavily inspired by
the art done for TOOL. I can't actually find any of my old album covers *pissed off* if anybody could tell me who did any of the covers i'd be appreciative.
can't decide on the colour for this one (bands fav.):

can't decide if i should even have this one; the other pieces have very strong
shapes, whereas this one is almost 'dreamy'.

are they really gonna be torn? how will that work?
I agree that the face is almost too vague, compared to the others. maybe just including more of the face might help that. They're Coming along well!

no they're not going to be torn, thats just some creative photoshopping, to give that effect. They will be trimmed so that the edge looks ragged, i've just got the std. bleed on these.
Thanks for the comments.
I like the above(most revent) song artwork more so then the texture driven/grunge style you presented before.
The reson being in each piece there now exist a clear concept. Although very minimal the composition works well not to over power or loose the lyrics.
On the otherhand, I do like the grunge style, but I felt all the activity was somewhat making the type hard to read.
Furthermore, I think the cover/back is well done with the blue and clouds.
However, it communicates christian music more so then what you had intended.
Then in your attempt to create a new front/back from what you previously had I think something very important was lost. Maybe it was the subtlty... but can't say.
The cover/back is sadly not working very well... for me att least. maybe its because I saw the work it was derived from and it in deed was stronger.... but don't know.
I would personally fiddle around with that cover a bit more to get the "look" of the grunge style in composition with the "dreamy/simple" you have going on in both the lyric communication.
I just thought about this... but if you had time/budget instead of printing this on standard stock I would go for a more rough textured stock.
or if you wanted to use this for a portfolio piece it would be very interesting to see the prodominent textures on the "dreamy" lyric communications carried througout.
Some one could help me with the terminology but, I think a textured pattern coating gloss treatment or something... its called.
Another idea... taking the prodominent textures from each dreamy lyric communication and combining them into somewhat "abstract" compositions to create the back and front cover design in combination with the grunge style would help add alot of countinuity within the whole.
Rather just having the back/front you have now.
nice job though so far
Thanks for the comments as always T. I'll certainly go back and consider some of the work. Like you said, continuity is what i'm trying to achieve, so i'm basically trying to find a balance between the two styles. The grunge work i started with is a very new style to me, probly why it wasn't executed very well, but the more minimal work is my thing. At the moment, the type is very ad hoc, so i need to fix that up as well. I really like Gill Sans, that i've used for 'Fuel'.
As for stock, its the eternal bane of designes; budget, looks like its going to be std. coated 150 gsm.
I hate how my tastes keep changing like the wind, it makes the continuity really hard to achieve, i really need to get some direction, i think i should maybe start from scratch with a clear plan.
