We are getting ready to hopefully upgrade at work finally - way overdue. I look to be getting the XServe G5 in here the beginning of next month. Still have to give all the upgrade figures to the bossman but the server for sure is a go even if nothing else is! Was just curious about what others who have been working with this server think of it. We are looking at the Dual 2ghz with 2GB ram and 240 GB hard drive (will actually have 3 x 80 GB HDs). Then we can dedicated one hard drive to each pub that we have and have the 3rd for the web design stuff we are about to take on.
A little background on current hardware. We have 3 PCs (a Gateway (ugh), a Dell and an HP) but we will be getting a 4th PC and its for me. It will be a Dell also :o) We also have 4 eMacs (3 are 800mhz and 1 is 1ghz) a G4 450, a G4 cube, My G4 866 Dual and an old G3. We have our very old but VERY faithful Apple Workgroup 9650 Server (yes she IS old but she still rocks!) and a crappy sh!tty Snap Server that I didn't order nor was I asked about otherwise we wouldn't have it :o)
We currently run OS9.x. I wanna FINALLY move into OSX!! I have been pushing for this upgrade for a long time now but there is SO MUCH to upgrade and its kinda expensive. I want to do it all in one long haul instead of spreading it all out. I think the bossman is gonna be game FINALLY! So..we have to upgrade Photoshop and we need 6 liscences for it, and Quark...well we need to be able to have 5 users on at once and Quark just gave me a 50% off rate for three upgrades PLUS 3 free liscenses...so...ya can't beat that. Honeslty I think they are scrambling to KEEP people bc of InDesign! LOL! But, something that should be about $1,200 is now gonna cost us about $600. I would LOVE to move to InDesign but he's not gonna let me as far as I can tell right now. Sucks...but nothing I can do.
Ok I kinda got off the XServe path..sorry! was gettin excited thinking about all these upgrades...LOL! In talking to a few ppl I get hardware from they have told me that the OSX Server software takes a lil gettin use to and I may need a crash course bc its pretty different from the OSX software. Does anyone here have any experience with the OSX server software? Is it really THAT difficult to grasp?? LOL! Just curious because even tho I am the graphic designer here...I am also the production manager, office manager and IT person apparently and I am the one that has to maintain everything. I wanna be sure I know what I am doing before I get everything transferred over. When people have questions they come to me and I am suppose to know the answer even tho I just know everything I know from trial and error. I wouldn't want them to actually have to learn anything on their own now would I *evil grin*?? haha!
Ok well if anyone has any experience with the XServe other than just saving files to it (hehe) please respond and let me know what you think ;o) Thanks!!
