Hi, I really want to know from you how much competition you think there is in the design market and how likely you can a job. I want to do a design degree but not sure whether in the future there will be too much competition and that you'll have to be very very good in design and if its worth doing a the degree?
So let me know what you think.:)

The time and money I spent learning the software, which could have been saved by just getting books off of Amazon WITH expedited shipping and buying the software and the hardware yourself, wasn't well spent. I graduated college in '04 and I still haven't been employed as a graphic designer. I'm going to start freelancing shortly. I'm happy for the knowledge that I've gained, but if you're someone with an open mind and have the determination to study an amalgamation of subjects yourself, then I would do without.

some of our best designers are without that oversized sheet of paper called a diploma. I didnt have the determination to teach myself, in part to me not having a clue where to start. School gave me knowledge I had lacked, but it didnt give me talent, that you come by with time or a creative spirit your born with.
I for one would have preferred to learn as an apprentice, I would have learned design and prepress (which schools mostly ignore)
The hell with it tho, what I dont know I'm learning quickly on a demanding job.

Get a business degree and then, if you have the talent, go out and use that business knowledge to freelance or start your own business. You will never make as much money working for a firm in the business that you want or deserve to make.
In my experience, having a design degree is nice, but not essential to making it in this business. Self promotion and a bit of business savvy will take you farther than good design and an art school diploma.

You have to be a better businessman and self promoter (than a designer) to get ahead in the design world.
Dont get discouraged, its hard work for sure-but it also is tremendously rewarding. If others can do it, why cant you?
