I have been tasked with redesigning and bringing new life to an old and outdated portfolio for a marketing firm I am currently working for. The owner and I have been at each others throats about how best to present the work. Because they are a "solutions" based company, not focusing on one speficic area (ie: web development) I felt that the best direction to go in was to showcase the work on a client basis. For example, client "A" was given a branded web site, brochure, and printed ads, client "B" was simply a website and a press release that appeared in 5 newspapers. His idea was to show the work in a category system, broken down into web design/development, branding, etc...

To me, showcasing the work the firm did with each particular client is much more powerful than just showing that we can do webdesign and print material. I want to show off what we did as a whole, per client. It just makes sense to me.

So I am wondering, from people who have been in this field, how would you do it?

I think if you did it by client it could be good at showing how the firm does different types of things together...like you said. You would be able to see how one client gets a group of stuff done and another only gets one thing done. Showing that the firm handles big projects and small projects with the same attention. If it was broken out in categories and there was only a little in a single category, it might send the message they aren't real experienced in that area.

This is strictly my opinion. I am sure others will have input for you. Weekends tend to be a bit slower around here.
