Try the link at the top of this page.
Or search Adobe.com for tutorials. They actually have some good ones by outside people.

PrintDriver is a large format digital print dude. His advice/opinions may not apply to the 4color/offset/web world of printing

The best practice you can get is from recreating work.

Take pictures and trace them with the pen tool. Scan a snickers bar label and recreate it in illutrator. Recreate one project a week and in about 1-3 months you'll master the pen tool. You'll need to use gradients to get the work done and if you want experiement with transparancies while your at it.

Good Luck!

Benjo is RIGHT ON. Last semester I was given an assignment to recreate a DV-Cam as photo-realistically as possible in Illustrator. The whole class, who are almost to a T design/program saavy, didn't think it could be done. But I'll be damned if the things we turned in didn't look freaking incredible. It's just a matter how many hours you're willing to put in.

all it takes is time. trace anything.
