I have this strange problem where PS CS1 won't "auto open" a file. When I drag a file icon over the PS icon it will open PS, but won't open the file. It gets really irritating because everytime I open a file I have to navigate through files windows using the open function in Photoshop and it kills my workflow. This just started happening about a month ago...does anyone know what causes this problem or how to fix it?

MAC based.... IF you open the PS pakage are there copies of the non-opening files there? I had this happening with a version of Illy. Adobe has got some funky monkey mojo in there these days.

Ya I had that happening too...couldn't figger where my HD space was going...found copies of the files I was drag and dropping, piled up in the PSD app folder! Hah!

Turkey should be out in an hour so kill some time here.

If Mac-
What OS?
If Tiger, was Upgrade used or Archive Install?
Did you create an alias of PSCS to put in your dock? If so, dump it and just drag the application icon to the dock to create a mirror rather than an alias.
Do you regularly run Repair permissions before and after installing updates and programs?
Do you leave your comp on 24/7 with no sleep or regularly run a maintenance tool like Macaroni, Cocktail or OnyX to do Unix maintenance, dump caches, and update the whatis/locate databases (kinda like the old Rebuild Desktop).

The Mac is no longer a toy. It requires a heck of a lot more maintenance than it used to...

Ditto. I do as stated above and never have problems. There is one free utilitiy that you can download from the web to help you, it's called "MacJanitor"-- google it.

Mac OSX 10.4 - clean install
PS icon in dock is a mirror
I repair permissions at least once a week and about once every 2 to 3 weeks I go into single user mode and fsck -f. My computer is on 24/7 but cpu sleeps after 15 minutes and screen sleeps after 10 more minutes.

OK, I have NO maintenance tool. I was looking at Disc Warrior but was told I could screw things up really bad if I didn't have a working knowledge of that software - which made me a little gunshy. I want something that is both effective and fairly easy to use...of the ones you listed, which fits that bill?

I am currently running VERY slow and programs like AI and PS bogg down during the simplest tasks, so I need to empty caches soon...

Thanks for the help.

OnyX is free too. The other two are like $10 and have an automatic setting so you can set em and forget em. I've used Macaroni but not Cocktail. Macaroni is easier to understand than OnyX but other people I know swear by Cocktail. Just be sure to read the instructions carefully whichever you choose. It is possible, using some of these utilities, to erase all of your contact pages and web bookmarks...
But OnyX also offers the ability to import bookmarks from IE to Safari and gives you some added dock capabilities too.

Bill, you might want to do a Find for Adobefnt.lst files and delete them all.
DO NOT DELETE THE ONES CALLED Adobefnt.db though!!!
These things are like a virus (they aren't really) and will fill up your hard drive if you let them. Damn Adobe hasn't put a stop to them even with CS2. Pain in the ass. There are free scripts you can get to do this as well.

Another thing that bogs down AI and especially Photoshop is the amount of scratch space you have on your alotted hard drive. I usually partition mine when loading the OS the first time to give about 10 to 20 gigs for scratch and nothing else then point my apps at it. Remember partitioning erases everything on the drive! so only do it when you have the time to backup and reload. If you don't have a dedicated partition for scratch, make sure you keep at least a third of your drive capacity empty and even better, optimized.

Disk Warrior is rather like Norton Utilities. It's saved my ass a couple of times on a crash, but it's more for disk recovery and optimization rather than routine maintenance.

JimKing, I'll have to check out that MacJanitor. First I've heard of it.
