90495.1 (http://forums.prospero.com/gc-golf/messages?msg=90495.1) Hi all,

Doing a school proj, for a graphics type of class.

This is hard to explain, but, you know those lines they show on the screen that shows the line of the putt while a player is putting, or in football, where the lines are graphically put on the screen on the feild?

Does anyone have any knowledge of these things? Anything at all is very helpful, THANKS!!

From what I understand there is alot of computing power that it takes to put that on screen like that. It isn't the networks that do it, it a third party company that does all that for the networks.

I always wondered that too.

http://entertainment.howstuffworks.com/first-down-line.htm

Just scanned over it a bit, looks like it takes a tractor trailer full of equipment, eight computers and four people. Color palettes determine where the line is drawn and where its not. Check out the link for more info.

Google search rocks - never forget that.

That is a damn interesting article...

And probably another (of many) example of of clients thinking something is simple and should be cheap since they only see the end result. "It's just a yellow line, why should I pay more than $25 for it? I'll just get my 12 year old nephew to do it for free."

:D

I was one of those people that thought it was easy to do (before I skimmed the article)... the only diffrence is I dont have a nephew!

Ya know I think if we made a website saying how hard some graphic design stuff was, we might get paid more?! Show everyone the site, and just go along with it... like wow you want a what? vertical line right here?! well that is going to take me about 45 man hours, and 12 super compters... for a total of $3,000 - no one knows what we really do anyways!

The problem is that you could only show a certain amount of difficulty. While most people think that the software make the job easier (it does to a degree), most can't tell the difference between good design & bad design, so to them it's just a matter of completing the piece.

A good parallel would be the field of architecture - there is software to make the blue prints, but how safe would the building be if your 12 year old nephew used that software and then someone built the building? Same goes for GD - some kid may be able to make a brochure, but would it do anything? Convince someone, sell a product, etc. I doubt it.

See... that's what I'm saying, that's what they THINK... we need to pull some boot camp ish on them... break 'em down, unlearn everything they think they know, and re-teach them using the new "webpage." come on this is my dream, let a guy dream on a dreary monday morning that there is a way for me to stop getting requests for rediculous changes!

Wellllll...you should be able to whip that web site out in what, like 5 minutes? I mean, all you have to do is press a few buttons and click the mouse a few times, right?

3.5 hours left of my workday, then another hour to get home. Why is it that weekends can FLY by, but work days seem to drag on indefinitely?!?

That's both cruel AND unusual! :p

Or line art. Just once I'd like to have the client sit down behind my shoulder and have him watch the entire process of making a complicated piece of line art (like an engine) from a blurry photo. Including printing out the partially finished piece for drawing the parts on paper that can't be made out from the photo, while referencing the actual physical object if available. You'd probably need to keep their eyes open with toothpicks.

Like the woman who only wanted to pay 65 bucks for her company logo and when I gave her a 65 dollar logo she thought it was lacking something. Yeah another 65 bucks!

Try another few hundred dollars. Even $130 for a professional logo is way under priced.
