Hi Guys,
I come last year from Europe and started my business here. I'm wondering what's with MACs? Why 90% of graphics here use MAC? Back in Europe MAC were like 5% of computers used. Are they really so much better than PCs?

we don't beat this dead horse here any more. It's really just a matter of personal preference and usually the topic just devolves into bickering.

Please check out these threads:

Why are macs better for graphic design?
http://www.graphicdesignforum.com/forum/showthread.php?t=2356

MAC/PC WARS
http://www.graphicdesignforum.com/forum/showthread.php?t=2855

and here is the SHORT answer, from our FAQ:

Question: Which is better, mac or pc?

Answer: Both have their uses in graphic design. While Macs have traditionally been considered "THE" tool for graphic design, either system is acceptable in the industry these days. It’s not which system you use, so much as how you use it. The quality of our work is NOT defined by our hardware.

there are probably more threads here, it's been discussed dozens of times. Try a forum search for more information.

also, here's one from our sister site, the creative forum: Are Macs More of a Status Symbol to Designers than a Necessity? (http://thecreativeforum.com/forum/showthread.php?t=334)

My first computer was a Commodore 64 with dual floppy disc drives and a phone modem and I thought that just ROCKED! Don't know what that has to with this discussion. What was the first computer you guys ever used. Now I am showing my age.

Yes!! And when you're tired of designing - you can fire up a game of Zaxxon! My uncle had one of those - used to play Zaxxon, wizards and warriors, dragons den - lucky for me I found his floppy disc for strip poker too!

Why 90% of graphics here use MAC?
To answer this question my best guess is that back in 1984 when apple redefined the printing/designing market with the advent of the Macintosh, just about every printer/designer that could afford it bought one . The rest who insisted on the "old school approach" eventually went out of business. Although PC's in recent years have caught up graphically, over the years design firms and printers have acquired a nice collection of software, files and assorted hardware (Printers, Scanners and assorted disk/hard drives) that it would be a giant pain in the ass to switch over to the PC side for no performance gain, and the other problems associated with PC's. (Spyware ect.)

People on this forum tend to be a bit testy on this subject because it is brought up in one form or another every other week .. and because there seems to be an abnormal amount of PC designers on this forum. ;)

All I can say from a printer's point of view is 90% of all problem files or poorly prepared jobs for press are from a PC. Not to mention that Macs are more productive.
That'll fire some folks up!

I'd imagine that has something to do with what PrintDriver fondly referred to as "secretary with CS" syndrome...

My boss, for example, thinks that Adobe CS is "magic" and will do all design work for me. So if someone working for a company is nominated their "designer" and really doesn't have any knowledge of printing, they aren't likely to prep their files properly just because they know how to dabble with software.

I can use both Mac and PC, but I work strictly on PC at the moment... and I don't think that it has ANY effect on my ability to design.

Edit: I should also mention that no print house I have ever worked with has had trouble with my files.

Well said Morea, if you do it right you do it right on either pc or mac if you do it wrong you do it wrong the computer you use won't matter.

jimking
11-30-2005, 11:51 PM
That's because you know what you're doing. That is true about the secretary thing. I do believe the PCs have come along way in graphics but thinking of the older days sends chills down my spine. But lets face it, the PC is for the masses and every other type of computer is for the pros.

Is it possible to ban anyone who asks a Mac vs. PC question? How about banning anyone who actually answers a Mac vs. PC question, or at least make them stand in a corner for a while.

Remember, when you respond to a Mac vs. PC thread you are just contributing to the problem.

The dead horse has been beaten into a pool of goo by now.

The machine has nothing to do with design aspect. It has to do with the speed of the process. I mean you can do all the production work on a Windows machine, and then run defrag, disc check, virus check, spy ware check, and god know what other random shut downs and stuff. Probably more now, wouldn't know. I haven't used a Windows machine in about a year or two. OR you could do the work and not worry about anything else.:D Oh did I mention that there is like 200 and some virus for Mac which only like five to ten are system crippling, but then a very large chunk of those are already taken care by Apple. Last time I checked Microsoft tried to fix a major secuirty issue and the patch crippled like 50% of the software for the system.
