Hi all, not really a flash user these days, so am a bit behind. We had a company come in the other day who demoed Flash PDFs to us. The idea being that unlike a .jpg, a PDF will get through a corporate firewall, so are ideal for animated invitations etc. The PDFs had full online registration capabilities, video etc.

They claimed that they're the only people who can do this, that they've developed some sort of add-on for Flash that does this. Is this true? As I say, I'm out of touch with the Macromedia world (purely print design for me these days), so any advice would be appreciated. They want to charge us a fortune to do this btw.

Are you talking about Flash Paper (http://www.macromedia.com/software/flashpaper/?promoid=BINU) , perhaps?

Acrobat 6 introduced the ability to fully embed SWF's into PDFs. I'm not sure about what all the technical Flash functions are that'll still work in this form, but if it's just basic Flash it should make it through. I mean, I thought the firewalls just checked for extensions, not the actual content of the files itself, right?

Hi, thanks for the reply - I can't see the ability to embed SWFs into acrobat 6 - where is the option to do that?

You use the 'Movie Tool' (it's only in the Pro version) and draw a rectangle to contain your SWF file. Then up pops the content window with choices like embed, and a button to browse for the file. Like I said, you'll know almost right away if it'll accept the file or not (I think Acr7 is more tolerant from what I've heard).

Great - I've asked the IT bods to upgrade me to Pro. They're grudgingly gonna do it. :D

Presumably I'll be able to basically do a full (but small) flash site embedded within the PDF. Ie, multiple scenes etc...?

Thanks again,

- Zu

If you'd like to forward me an example SWF file to try, I'd be happy to test it. Send me a private message.
