Help! I am creating a catalog and need to embed an image from photoshop with its clipping path into Illustator. Can I open the image and cut and paste it into Illustrator? Once I do this, how do I make a stroke behnd the clipping path? For example I have a photo of a kid and I want the photo of her to have a thick white stroke behind her clipped path. How can I achieve that look?

show a picture, im not quite understanding what you mean. Also i would use the file/place option from the illy drop down menu, instead of cutting and pasting.

Bring the EPS image into AI, and then embed it. This allows you to access the clip path.

Click on the path, add the outline to twice the dimension you want. Move the path behind.

The best way to create a fully editible Vector image (with anchor points) from Photoshop to Illustrator is to use the path tool in Photoshop.

One really cool fast way I like to teach my students is to open my image in Photoshop. Next, Go to Select/Color Range and select a good region of color at about 180 or so. Hit ok and you will have a bunch of marching ants on your image for the selection. Next open your Paths palette and click on the button on the bottom that looks like the girl with braided hair (I call her the girl from Holland). You will notice that now you have what looks like a bunch of colored paths.... just Edit/Copy ..... Open Illustrator, Paste onto your artboard document and click faster on the dialog box option.

Select the object with the "V" tool and select your stroke and give it a color.... it should give you an amazing outline illustration of your picture. Plus you can Direct Select and and fill in other regions with the fill.
Many other cool techniques I have at my website http://worldcuptraining.com

I create video training tutorials for my college students at a design school.

good luck,

I'm still gasping at 'catalog' and 'Illustrator'. You aren't doing the layout in Illy are you?

I don't know if you are aware of it, but the easiest way to do your clipping paths is just by outsourcing them. I heard its pretty cheap and painless. I was recommended to use www.LazyMask.com (http://www.LazyMask.com). I know a few that are fond of them.

Thinking the same thing. Can you imagine a 200page mag. done in illy with embedded graphics? Sounds like a bad idea.

Sorry, but where's the learning curve here? If you really intend to get into graphic design, you need to learn to do the tough stuff yourself...and clipping paths would be one of 'em. Wouldn't you rather have that money in your own pocket?

This is gonna be a hard hitting thread!

Just create your clipping paths in PS, save them as .eps files, <place> them into the illy layout. In the links palette, <Arrow><embed image>. then follow Broacher's directions.

If you have to outsource making clipping paths, get out of this business. that's one of the dumbest things I've ever heard...

I'm sure it's easier nowdays, but I used to (in the old days) save the clipping path and then export as Illustrator paths.

does that export the picture under the paths, too? "Cuz that seems a helluvalot easier than the process I usually go thru. :)

Sorry, dd, just the paths. But there is so much you can do with the path in Illy. And lining up to the placed image with the placed path never seemed that tough. It brings in the path with no stroke attributes so you need to view your placed paths in outline mode.
Another option, though I've never been a big fan, is the old copy from one app to paste into another. But that idea seems to be working now to a degree in the creative suite apps.

This is all I could focus on as well - a catalog in Illustrator???

Although I once worked with a GD who built the company catalog in Ilustrator, all 200+ pages of it, every one a separate AI file. All before my time of course, although on occasion I had the need to visit these files. *shudder*

The outsourcing idea could be good if your so backed-up you just don't have the time.

I mesed around with that this morning. It was pretty cool for what I did, cause once i got it into Illy, I could do what I wanted with them. Thanks for the idea, Rick!

God sounds like a nightmare. I'd go bonkers.....BUT I'd do it myself.
Paying someone to make paths for me? I don't think so. A path party with some geeky friends'....maybe. food and drinks.... Paying? NEVER!

You know of course at some point the whole thing needs to be redone properly in a layout package.
