I present myself for edumakation to you camera wizards. My photographic IQ is nearly as low as my financial one (strictly single digits), despite the fact that my Dad was a photog for yrs. I'm considering a point & shoot digi like the Fuji coolpix F10. I've seen some great pics taken with it online, and it does particularly well in low light with no flash (shoots iso 1600). Thoughts?

I would help you Joe, but I don't know much about digital cameras. I am getting one for Christmas, but that's about all I know.

Hope this helped!

I hadn't, but I've read enough reviews since posting that, and seen pics it's taken. I'm getting it.

whew! I thought we were going to have some pretty high shipping bills going back and forth with one camera.

I'm getting a Konica-Minolta Dimage Z5...should be here the first of the week...gotta figure out how to get my hands on it without waiting a week!

Ah that's a real camera sized camera. I was looking for something pocket sized, but that took real pics. The f10 is it. The pics it takes are incredibly sharp, and the low light shots are amazing for a pocket point and shoot cam.

I have an Casio Elixium which are what was used for almost all my photos I post. It's about the size of a credit card and fits nicely in a shirt pocket or coat pocket. It's good in low light but the ISO isn't nearly as high as the one described. I have been happy with it...if that's any use to ya?! Good luck!!

usually on those 1600 ISO's the image will have so much grain and noise in it, that its completly worthless. my 2 cents. good luck with the camera!

Yes D, that's right, normally compact point and shoots are useless and grainy at that high an iso, but this one takes excellent pics at 1600. Check some out, you won't believe it.

Helped me pick out my camera. It has recommend cams, and pretty much any other camera you can think of.

what did you want to know? A decent ISO range is a useful thing because it gives you an extra way to control your exposure. It's analogous to film speed, except you can change it on the fly. Most cameras have an ISO range of 100 - 1600, which is very acceptable for what you want. ISO refers to the sensitivity (is also thought of as speed) of the sensor to light. 1600 is basically the highest sensitivity which means you get a grainier image but can afford to use a faster shutter speed and smaller aperture. 1600 is 5 times more sensitive than 100 (100, 200, 400, 800, 1600)

I'm about as good with a camera as you JP, and I bought the Nikon Coolpix 4600. It is a very nice little pocket size camera. Lots of shooting modes and shoots well in almost every condition. You might want to step up to the 5600 model for the sound on video mode and the extra megapixel.

I went ahead and ordered the Fuji F11. same as the f10 but a larger LCD and aperture and shutter priority. It was the camera's incredible low light shots that sold me. No other cam in it's price range shoots iso 1600 without graininess.

Well the camera arrived yesterday, unfortunately I was already on route to LI for NY's eve, so I haven't seen it yet. But be prepared for some pathetically amateurish shots in the coming week! :)

I'm the son of a photographer. But the music bug bit me instead. We had plenty of those in the family also, on both sides.

So did my mentor, Steve Howe.

THE Steve Howe?

He was in a band with Steve Hackett, GTR, that only put out one album. One of the very few that I like every song on the album. Some more than others, of course, but every song was good, in my opinion.

Yes is one of my favorite bands of all time. I liked the Anderson, Bruford, Wakeman and Howe album, but wasn't as enthralled with the Yes Union album. I think it would have been interesting to see what the two bands had done separately.

Well I just bought a 512mb card for the camera. The F11 doesn't come with one. So that should be here in a couple/3 days. Then it's off to find something to shoot at.

Ok, the cam and the card are both here, and tonight I'll be at the NYR game at MSG, so expect some pics either tonight or 1st thing tomorrow. Just a warning, in case you wanna sell your PC quick. :)

awesome! i've been dying to go to a hockey game to take some pics, but they only let people with 75mm max for SLR cams.....that's why point and shoots are quite handy.

How about a 2x extender..On my traditional gear I used a 2x extender on my 28 to 70mm making it up to 140mm. Lost some aperature though. It was pretty inexpensive around 70us dollars or so.

Well I got em but they're crap. I was in the 3rd row, forced to shoot through the plexiglass. They came out lousy.

LOL< thanks, but it's more than just that. It was the 1st time out with this cam, and I found out a few things. 1st off, can't shoot anything much at that level light shooting auto. Have to set the fastest shutter speed, underexpose a bit, and around iso1600.
