So this is the suggestion I have got for my new machine setup. The bar I am going for is a) a machine capable of playing newer games (HL2, Doom3) on high settings, b) A machine that can handle 3d rendering and c) general stability (man i hate bugs, errors and other Bill Gates TMs).

- MSI K7D Master-L Motherboard Socket A, MP AMD760mpx, Dual, ATA 100, ATX 266Mhz FSB
- 2x AMD Athlon MP2800+ 2,13 Ghz Socket A 266Mhz, 512 KB Barton, BOXED
- PowerColor Radeon 9600XT Bravo 256MB AGP, ATI 9600XT, DVI-I, VIVO, Retail
- Western Digital Caviar 160GB IDE ATA/100 8MB cache 7200RPM
- TwinMOS PC3200 DDR-DIMM 1024MB Dual Pack Kit w/two matched PC3200 CL2.5 DDRs
-Q-Tec Powersupply ATX 550W Dual Fan
-Q-Tec Midi tower ATX TL-MD, Silver Transparent

Well first off alek, if you want a rig that will run HL2, Doom3, FarCry at their maxed settings, you've got the wrong graphics card. I wouldn't go for anything less beefier than a radeon 9800 pro. The prices dropped big time on those... you can buy one of those now for $200. Although, if you're looking to play those games @ 1600x1200 w/ full FSAA and AF and everything in game cranked to the hightest setting possible, you'll want to go with a radeon x800XT.

Also, if you can afford it, get Athlon 64 chips... they'll smoke a Barton any day of the week, and they're not all that much more expensive.

That's pretty good ram, although, I've never been a huge fan of TwinMOS... I would go w/ a higher end memory manufacturer, like Corsair, OCZ, or Mushkin.

Also another thing to consider. Will you be overclocking your system (cranking up your fsb or your video card)???? If so, you should go with an Antec True Power PowerSupply. They make the best PSU's for the money, imo. You couldn't get more stable voltage rails anywhere else right now. If you do plan on OC'ing that beast of a system, you might want to look into buying some aftermarket cooling supplies like some high output fans, liquid cooing equipment, etc. ;)

One last thing about the video card. If you're buying an ATi card, I strongly suggest you buy either one that was made by Sapphire or ATi. The third party cards can sometimes be cheaper, and they will use some of the same standards that ATi specifies, but they tend toward using cheaper memory modules on their cards. AFAIK, only ATi and Sapphire put the good memory chips (2.8ns Hynix) on their cards. These are better because they come clocked default @ 360 mhz (instead of the 340 mhz of the Samsung or Infineon chips). The Hynix ram also overclocks better than the other cheaper onboard video memory.
