There's this job opening nearby me, and I've been looking to get out of where I'm at now for at least 6 months. This job opening is well paid, full benefits, and located in a beautiful area. I think it would be prime.

I could use some advice on cover letters, interviews, and portfolios. My resume has gotten my foot in the door 3 times, but I can't seem to get past that. I think the biggest thing is my portfolio. If I could get in, I could prove myself...

Here's a brief on my background. 1 year experience in a huge corporate insurance agency doing graphic design for in-house marketing materials, and 2 years in a large company that specializes in promotional products. Thing is, I haven't had the creative freedom I would've really liked, so I'm not 100% happy with much of anything I got out of those jobs. There may be a few things, but that would be all. So... what are some quick projects I can whip up quick that you think might be impressive?

The place I'll be sending my resume to is a large corporate company and I'd be designing promtional/marketing pieces for them.

Please! Any advice is GREATLY appreciated!!!! :o)

I'm thinking you waited too long to be upgrading your portfolio for this job if it's posted now...
But, you say your resume has gotten you in the door, send it now.
'Whip up' a marketing campaign for a company or two out of the phone book and hope you have enough time before the interview to get it done.
1 year doing marketing materials may not be enough unless you have a kick-ass book. Promo products is usually considered production work, not design, no matter what you may have done.
Give it a shot anyway. Interviewing is always great practice.

Ride that fine line between cocky and confident. these people WANT people who know what they are doing. but you don't want to come off as a total @ss cause you might be deemed a 'problem' which all designers get the title of. Comes with the territory.

as far as portfolio it is quality over quantity. don't slam them with a lot of stuff especially if your not happy with them. pick apart or own portfoio and make a nice one out of your best pieces.

Good luck and let us know what happens.

amibo.. just saying if you don't have much creative stuff or 'good' stuff it's better to just highlight your best stuff and not stack the portfolio.
