quark 4.1: line up columns automatically?

I should really know this but I don't. I usually change leading to line up columns. Isn't there a way to make Quark do it automatically? Thanks.

What do you mean to line up the columns you change the leading? I'm lost :o( You mean to get all your copy lined up or to get your columns lined up so that all your copy is lined up? Am I making sense at all? LOL! There are 2 ways to make colums in Quark. One is to draw seperate text boxes and link them all, but use guides to get them all aligned right if you do it this way. The other is to make one big ole text box and use your measurements to specify how many columns you want in that box. If you do set it up that way, double click on the box with the move tool and type in what you want your gutter width to be (on the text tab)because otherwise it is automatically set at .167...you can also specify your # of columns there.

I'm not sure if that answered your question or not bc I am still trying to figure out what you mean about lining up your columns...sorry :o( Hope that helps some...LOL!

I want my texts and columns to line up. I have one box with three columns set to the default gutter. But text doesn't always line up correctly. For example text in column 2 doesn't correctly align with text in column 3. Hope this clarifies things. Language is so imprecise!

So you are trying to align your box that has 2 columns up with your box that has 3 columns?? If that is the case then you have to be sure they are the same font, same point size, same leading and same kerning in both text boxes in order for all of that to match up if I am understanding you right.

Do you have your paragraphs formatted with "space before" and/or "space after"? If so, then this is probably causing the irregularity in spacing between your lines of text. Make sure that your space before/after is:
a) equal to your leading;
b) a multiple of your leading; or
c) exactly half of your leading
ex: If your leading is10 pts and you want a space after each paragraph, the space should be10 pts,20 pts or5 pts. I've found that 150% of your leading works also.

sh!t option T, and then select the format tab. that is where you can select the space before and space after numbers. that is what will give you a bigger or smaller space between lines when you hit the return key. Play with it a bit you get it...
