Must be the week for InDesign problems! lol.

I can't remember, and can't find it in my book - but how do you adjust the spacing between lines of text when you have a return space in there? I can do it with all the lines together as in a paragraph, but if, say, for bullets I want to adjust the amount of breathing room between:

(bullet) blahblahblahblahblahblahblahblahblahblahblahblahbl ahblah point one

(bullet) blahblahblahblahblahblahblahblahblahblahblahblah(p oint two)

Leading.

You want to go to your character palette and adjust it here:

Yeah, that's the one I was trying to use - but no go. I've tried highlighting the text above and below the space to close that in (it just screws up all the other letting in the short paragraphs above and below it), and I've tried just letting my cursor be in the empty space... but for whatever reason, it isn't changing that.

I'll try PB's suggestion. It can't be complicated, this is one of those things that are done all the time.

You can also put your curser in between the type you want to adjust, hold down Alt + the left and right arrow keys to adjust spacing between letters.

oh yeah, and its "Leading" not "Letting" ;)

Are you making sure you're selecting the hard returns too before adjusting leading? Sometimes I have to "show hidden characters" to make sure I get everything selected.

^ true. I usually put my cursor on the individual line and double click to highlight the line and then apply the leading. ID can be a little pissy sometimes.

Hmmm.... still not working. I wonder if it's just something to do with my document at this point?

blewis - where is "show hidden characters?"

No pressure on this folks - I just redid the ad in Quark in about 10 minutes to fire off to proof for the client, so I'm free to fart around with the stupid thing.

it's under the "Type" menu, gg.

Type > show hidden characters

I think we have a confusion in terms going on here....

Here's the doc, and the area I'm trying to alter the spacing on, and in the second one, what happens when I select the lines below, the return space line, and the bottom line of the one above:

Got it... but didn't change anything. Curiouser and curiouser.

you might consider removing the hard returns and just using the leading to separate the bullet points.

Don't know if I just missed it, but have you tried doing it one line at a time?

Is there a hard return between each line?

I did try the one at a time - no such luck - I can change the numbers in the leading, but nothing happens in the text, and when I click away and go back to it, the number is back to the original number. Very odd.

I tried removing the hard returns - that does do it, bit of a pain because then I have to select, say, the top two lines in the first point (see the first pic) and readjust those accordingly, but yet it can be done that way - thanks!

No just between the points like this:

We have 17 professionally maintained tanning units to insure you get the BEST tan possible
(hard return)
Private, air-conditioned sunrooms with music
(hard return)
We are Smart Tan trained to help you develop your BEST tan ever!

Yes, like so. Just no hard returns then, PB? I can do that.

Another artist from a print shop and I were discussing Quark and InDesign about a month ago. I haven't used ID much (most of my clients need Quark files) unless it's a slow day and the client won't care what program I use. Anyways, she said she felt setting text was harder in ID than Quark. I feel the same way, but then, as I said, I haven't used it much. I think ID has all the makings of a superior program, but it needs a little streamlining.

There are hard returns on the top two lines.
I added more leading to the final line.

I am using ID 2, but I have used CS and like it quite a bit. I actually started in Quark, and was SOOOO opposed to making the switch that they had to drag me kicking and screaming. And now - after a little time getting familiar - I have come to feel that ID is friendlier.

At first I hopped back and forth between the Quark and InDesign and I felt the same way. Now I'm completely InDesign and it all feels natural & easy to me now.

Well, that gives me faith. I certainly think the program has a lot to offer, especially since it can open psd's and work in layers. I just wish the text part were easier!
