I can't go for more than a few hours straight without taking a quick break. I find that taking short breaks more often is better.

I don't actually get 'breaks' except for lunch, but every 15 minutes or so I try to remember to look around and focus on things around the room to keep my eyes from getting too tired.

get some glasses/contacts. We all do eventually.

Morea, I feel for you if you can't just get up and walk around for a few minutes and maybe go talk to someone else, I have had jobs like that and I am thankful the place I am at now is so casual and somewhat flexible. I mean as long as I get my work done by deadline I can pretty much come in a few minutes late or leave a few minutes early. Which comes in handy when I have to drive over an hour to get hear and get home. And once the kids come they have agreed to let me work odd hours at first to help out until they are old enough to go to my sister inlaws for the days. This way my wife will be able to keep her job, I don't think we could do it on one income.

I have things in my cubicle to purposely distract me from time to time. Hand-held things, like slinkys, toys, small puzzle thingys, etc. It helps to take me away from the computer screen and give my eyes a rest.

Drink lots of water. It's my friends cure for everything. But, if you drink lots of water, you'll have to get up and use the biffy more often thus moving you away from the screen so it probably would help in the long run.

My fiance used to have a CRT monitor and that gave him major headaches. After he switched to an LCD he was fine. If you have a CRT, it could be adding to the eye strain and making your headaches worse.

u kidding me I'm up every 45 minutes, my bosses dont seem to take notice.

Although I had the same problem as you, I had 'after-vision' for about 20 minutes once, I think you need to get away from the comp for an hour at that point

I'v read a lot of reports that say you should at least stand up, stretch, and look around quick every 20 minutes, for those of us with jobs that require sitting behind a computer all day

Get up from your desk, go get a soda, go take a walk outside, the natural light outside will help refocus your eyes. Florescent lights are nice energy savers but they drain you, and tend to tire your eyes, so does the monitors.

Just take a 5 min walk away from your work every other hour. hell, print an email or something (your documenting emails) on another floor or farthest away from your cubical, so you have to walk there, gives your eyes time to rest.

Or like above, drink water so you have to use the.. haha like that word: Biffy.

Eventhough I've always had 20/20 vision, I got glasses. I use them when I spend long hours in front of the computer, they really do help.

I've not heard of glasses helping computer eye strain. How does this work? Does it also work with contacts?

Hehe... Biffy... that's a good word to store away for future use.

get your monitor setup correctly. having a low refresh rate (use highest possible for your equipment) and setup the brightness/contrast/gamma stuff and it should help.

an LCD greatly reduces eye strain, at least for me. My boss runs a very nice viewsonic 21" crt and I can't look at it for more than ten minutes without going crazy, with the lcd i'm on i can stare all day long and still have 20/10 vision.

As others have said, get up and walk around, look at different things, but do it before your eyes get tired or head hurts.

and i've never heard of a biffy before ;)

if i need to keep a-goin i just turn down the brightness for a while. if not i just get up and walk around a bit. usually works pretty well

Here's an idea for eye therapy... get some green tea bags, soak in cold water for a bit, squeeze them out a little, and then lay them over closed eyes. It's a good refresher. I think it relaxes the blood vessels or something. I haven't done it in a while but it would probably help eye strain. Also, look away and focus on a far away object (I hope you have a window nearby) every half hour or so. Good luck! :)
