It's here (http://www.apple.com/), folks. The Intel era has begun.

yeah, it looks pretty sweet. I'm heading down to the apple store to play with iLife & iWork 06

Not me, I'd rather go to an orange store than an apple store, I prefer them much, much more.

I dont like apples that much, maybe once in a while, just not every day.

:p

Apple's always had Christmas in January ;)

I'm a little surprised that Mac Mini updates weren't announced (but probably soon). However, the Powerbook was LOOOOOOOOOONGGGGGGGGGG overdue for a new processor. The last time it got a new processor (not just speed updates) was early 2001.

I think the MacBook name sounds retarded, but maybe it was renamed to that because Apple wanted to shake the "Powerbook" stigma (from being stuck on the G4 so long)?

Still, these are not the products I'm waiting for. BRING ON THE INTEL POWERMACS!

I agree that the name is dumb, but the macbook pro looks pretty sweet!! Part of the reason they're ditching the name, I bet, is because they've been called Powerbooks since about 1914, and Apple hates to keep the same name for that long.

i thought the intel chips were supposed to make them more inexpensive? $1999? I'll stick with my iBook and eMac, i think. ;)

Dual core though..... think two virtual processors.
They are faster too.....

Well, laptops (not budget ones like iBooks, etc) have always been pretty expensive, that's only $200 more than my five month old PC laptop (which doesn't come anywhere near dual core).

Nor do I completely expect Apple to pass on the savings. However, I can see them dramatically dropping the prices at some point as their transition into Intel becomes more mature and they get more used to production. I think it will be stand-alone desktop units that will be the competitive ones.

In a way it almost seems like the spankings AMD gave to Intel with the 64bit dualcore processors, they where in so much pain they decided to switch teams. LOL

Actually the Core Duo performs very well against the X2 Athlon in the 2.0 ghz range (though the X2 is available at speeds of around 2.4 currently compared to 2.0 for the Core Duo).

And as far as laptops chips go (the Core line), Intel's offerings are still superior to AMDs. They perform at the same level as the X2's (per clock speed) and consume about 30 less watts while doing it (about 110 to 140). Very important for a laptop chip.

Intel's desktop offerings are another matter, though... AMD spanks them pretty easily (though that should change in the next few months when Intel introduces the Merom/Conroe/whatever line of chips).

Dual core though..... think two virtual processors. make that two physical processors, occupying the same space as one processor. although people often think that 2x2ghz processors means 4ghz of performance, it actually means twice as many things can be done at the same speed as before. hence seeing better performance when rendering, applying filters or any other process which involves calculations rather than the visual results you see on the screen. one thing that will be better from this is flash will actually run a mac now! amazing.

Sweeeeeeet! Except now my Powerbook seems old and outdated. Wish I could afford a macbook... Maybe someday!

Well hell has frozen over.......maybe I will be around for the end of the world. Anyways it looks exactly like the PowerBook i'm typing this on, but that seems to be the only thing that is similar. HOLLY HELL THEY CHANGED THE POWER CONNECTION! That is freaking sweeet. That there would make me buy it. I'm always afraid of the little tip being broken off inside right now. The built in camera is a nice touch although that big band up top now kind of bothers me. The price has jumped big time for the laptop though.....2400 gets you a 17 inch PowerBook. Although if it is that much quicker I think I could give up some screen. Just a thought on the name though.....Are they considering making only one type of laptop? Maybe making the consumer and bussiness into one? Anyways if it runs alright I just might consider shelling out the extra money and getting an iMac instead of a cheaper PC......:D

This is definately exciting! I had been hearing rumors about a powerbook g5 coming out so I have been holding off on buying a laptop. However this new macbook sounds awesome! With a student discount you can save $200 on it. Has anyone else heard anything about a powerbook g5?

jobbs said the g5 would be in the powerbook a while ago bubt he had to take that statement back, there still having issues with overheating and what not who knows how far along they have came since he retracted his statement

This MacBook is the definitive successor to the PowerBook G5, and Apple will be transitioning off PowerPC (G5's included) processors over the next year. So even if they could now get a G5 into a laptop, they probably wouldn't release them. Their laptop woes is mostly the reason they've gone Intel.

MacBook... I don't mind the name. They have been using "Powerbook" for a long time, I suppose they gotta mix it up at some point.

IBM simply could not make the chips with a good enough manufacturing rate to hit the clock speeds. Too inefficient and too costly. Intel however, really is the bomb of chip makers. These MacBooks sure look good enough to take home.
