Hi. I been lurking around here for a while. But I have question I just can't find the answer too and its probably simple to others.
But how do you get the head in front of the logo but keep it as part of the background? Here is a link to better undertstand what i'm talking about, http://nobledesktop.com/qex09interview.html. But how to do it in Indesign or Photoshop.
Thanks..

very carefully.
I would imagine some sort of mask was involved. I've never done that in Quark, but I have in Photoshop & Illustrator.
Simple: clipping mask, or just put the layer with the subject ontop of the title.

Probably in 3 layers.
Or a reverse clip on the title.
I don't like doing this in Quark as shown in your example. Especially behind hair. Quark doesn't support feathering of clipping paths so it looks a little hard-edged and unnatural.
But Indesign does do the feathering. Image as .eps with a photoshop clipping path.

Yah, that technique is ALL OVER just about every magazine on the shelf right now. Feathered clipping path, PD?? Haven't tried that yet, but I've only been in InDesign a few months now.
If you're in InDesign, I've been finding that the best workflow is to put layered objects like native PhotoShop files, or objects with transparent backgrounds into InDesign and build the rest there.
If you've got a complex background as part of your photo, you might also consider just putting it together in PhotoShop with a bit of careful masking.
PHOTOSHOP PROCESS:
1. copy up your image
2. put the title behind that new layer
3. add a layer mask to the new layer
4. fill that mask in black
5. carefully paint back in the head and hair by using white on the mask
There are variations on this technique, but that's one of the most straightforward ones.
Let's see it when you're done, OK?

After searching the internet, extensively all day! I have found the soulution to your problem. Go to http://www.creativepro.com/story/howto/24159.html Download 3 items and do pdf tutorial. It will show you how it is done.
I am a designer of a national magazine No Cover Magazine, and I was trying to find this out myself. Do not use extract because the results are not accurate. goodluck.

I personally think that Interview example is done very poorley. While it isn't an easy thing to do, you should be able to see some more of the lettering through her hair.

Not only was the masking done poorly, it completely ignores the need for new readers being able to easily identify it by name, by having a poor choice of font.

There's at least 3 excellent Quicktime tutorials on Russell Brown's site. I never get tired of going there: http://russellbrown.com/tips_tech.html
Relevant ones for this topic are:
Blue Sky Thinking (and 'More Blue Sky Thinking')
as well as a real old (but goody) one almost at the bottom: 'Advanced Masking'
Be prepared to be highly distracted on this page. Russell, you're my hero!
