Hello
I've been lurking around here for a while and decided to sign up after getting a lot of good info on here and seeing some great work.
I am a web designer trying to set up my freelance business, and I'm about to jump into Mambo. I already have two clients I plan to build their sites in Mambo. I've worked with it before but I've never set it up or actually been the admin on a mambo site.
I'm looking for advice for the ease of setting up mambo, creating a template, setting a template up, the requirements for setting up mambo, is it a free program or do I have to purchase it and any other tips on using Mambo as well as pros and cons of the program, that will be helpful.
Thank you,
Cre8tor

mambo...never heard of it...but that doesnt mean much since I'm mostly a print designer. You could probably find out pricing online, and maybe a forum devoted to mambo, perhaps

You can do anything on zombocom.
Mambo is garbage IMO. It's not that flexible and the admin interface and metaphors are confusing. Good luck training your users to manage their site with it :/

haha @ zambo! hilarious.
ecstyle - what do you suggest then as another option to mambo? i've worked in it and i liked it, i've just never set one up...a team i was previously with trained others who didn't even know where "ctrl" was on their keyboard to log in and update galleries.

ecsyle, there is no t there ;)
If you like it, use it. I didn't like it. I am currently researching other CMS's and really don't have another option yet. Textpattern maybe :/

Avoid "DoITLive" like the plague. It's a huge piece of crap and a pain in the ass to use.

Mambo... Never heard of it as a Program...
It is on the other hand an art form (mamboism) and fashion design company in Australia.

Surely you're looking at using Joomla...the sequel to mambo. It's fairly easy to use but you will most definately need to sit down and actually work out the structure of users etc. Templates I have only modified and not created from scratch but there are plenty of tutorials around. Just give google a search and you'll find loads.
I agree - do some searching on the net. You'll find TONS of stuff. Also, check out the Mambo/Joomla forums. I personally use Joomla on several of my sites, and now build all my client sites in them so they can log in and update their sites. I continue to be the Admin (and thus am the only one with backend access) but it gives my clients the ability to feel like they're doing something on their site w/out screwing things up totally. But like someone else said, to each their own!

I recently found out about Joombla and I do plan to use it for my own site as well as my clients. I downloaded it but just need to figure out how to set it up. That's a whole new can of uncooked worms there...
Any suggestions on where to find a good setup tutorial, forum or tips? I can't seem to find anything specific, even on joombers.com
Thanks

Okay, so why arn't you using Dreamweaver and train your customers on Contribute? I would never think of using anything esle. But thats just me...

I prefer to work with software that can be installed on the server side rather than the client's, that way all that is required is a login through a browser interface. Plus, not everybody develops in dreamweaver.

Yeah I know, but I would like to mention that Dreamweaver is only a tool, that can set up either client or server side sites...
Good luck with your project.

You can install contribute on a web server?

No, I that would be cool. I usually offer training which includes the installation of contribute and how to edit. Most of my customers get the hang of it pretty easily. And so far I've had no complaints. Back then it was cheaper, and the customer didn't have to buy dreamweaver.
However, the server-side is becoming more popular even for my market. So, am moving in that direction, but I can still use DreamWeaver. The current web application I'm building, is a PHP site running a mysql database, that is managed via log-in and password.
I've heard someone else mention Mambo, I'll check it out... its interesting to see what others are doing.
How long have you been designing?
well, this isn't my thread. lol But I started in the mid-90s doing web design. Probably around 97 was my first site (edit: not that it was any good, mind you!). I'm old.
Most of the sites that I build are in php with a mysql database behind it -- powerful stuff. I don't build those from scratch though.

That's alright Jasmine. I haven't had the chance to play with Contribute and I think I actually have a copy at home, an older version. I did want to learn Joomla though since my client looked at it and really likes it. I just need to actually set it up, which I've never done before.
So you use Contribute?
Now my client likes the fact in Joomla he can log in and just update the content needed after everything is set up.
I still have yet to actually set up Joomla, but I'm hoping to give it a try this weekend.
Thanks for your input though :)
I still need to learn more about mysql and so forth so I'm sure I'll be asking more questions.

cre8tor... Sorry I havn't been around. There dosn't seem to be much activity around here, so I've been lurking at other sites. I am in the process of converting a site to Mambo... Lets talk! I think we maybe able to help each other out...
Joomla's templates are integrateable with Dreamweaver, I havn't set any up yet, but I'l be working on that pretty soon.
Hope all is well with you!
