well they've at least met me half way, plus if our company hits our sales goal (which looks more than doable) i get at least a $2000 bonus, I will more than likely go on salary which will bump up my pay another $4000 plus I have the opportunity for more bonuses as I can prove I'm generating revenue for the company... so when all is said and done I am probably going to actually get darn near what I wanted, plus they are giving me complete control of the marketing department. It's my ship to sink or swim and this baby's gonna swim like that guy pulling boats with his teeth.
Now I have a final meeting next monday or tuesday to present them my ideas for my department and finalize pay details etc.
Thanks for all of the encouragement everyone!

CONGRATULATIONS!!!!!! This is what we designers HAVE to do! Find out what we're worth and demand it!
Asking for what you are worth becomes a habit, just as accepting less than you are worth does. I think our industry has gotten used to the latter and things won't change for us until we get used to the former.
If more of us support each other like we did with you and if more of us begin to expect what we're worth and demand it, salaries will gradually begin to rise.
People think that there is no money in design but that is NOT TRUE! As quiet as it's kept, there are a lot of people making well into the six figure range as graphic designers. The trick is (a) NOBODY will believe you're worth that kind of money if you don't and (b) regardless of whether folks think you're worth it, you won't get it unless you ask for it.

Congrats, Colonel. Make sure you get all that in writing. Secondly, do you have any original recipe chicken for a hungry designer over there?

you...you have HUGE CAJONES... ~ Random quote from Vice City
Very Good, thats awesome news, and Its wonderful they met you at your mark.
Hey Mr. Chris Gee have you chatted about this on the Prepared Mind at all, I'd like to hear some more inspirational talks on this, that way I can stop feeling bitter about the wages most designers I know are getting, and perhaps have some more hope for us.

thanks everyone. I'll be getting all of this in writing next monday, though the pay is retro active to yesterday's date.
They told me it was hard to gauge the exact effect I had on their bottom line but that they believe I was a huge part of their success this past year, and the more success I bring them the greater I will be rewarded.
So all in all, it looks like I should be able to buy a house as planned this summer!

Absolutely! My podcasts appear entirely based on people's availability to sit down with me for an hour. I have several folks lined up and some who are to discuss business matters like negotiation.
But this is essentially a simple issue. (a) KNOW what you're worth. (b) BELIEVE you're worth it. (c) Get into the habit of not accepting less than what you are worth.
We have to do EXACTLY what Colonel did. He researched salary, set and goal for where he wanted to be and formed a plan for how he would get there.
Even if his plan didn't work at his current employer, he was ready to essentially submit his proposal to another employer, who probably WOULD have met his demands.
Let's not make the huge mistake of looking at this as some sort of aberration. Anyone reading this who feels they are in the same position that Colonel was, start making your plan to get the salary you want, TODAY.
