I love this site. It looks nothing like a web site. Take note all you designers: We need more of this.
I thought it was cool so I thought I'd share.

Creative yes, practical no.
It's great to experiement and do things that aren't commen but to me this is not a good design. It's an experiement and it might lead to something great but right now I don't see designing sites like this practical.

I don't really like it too much :o(
It's different so that's cool but almost everything runs center down the screen - ICK! And its all B&W...they could totally make this work still if they threw some color our way and redesigned it (hehe - ok sorry)! We have all seen come cover art for NIN before and they could incorporate that somehow into this site I think...it just doesn't mesh with their style...my opinion of course ;o)

the best thing about it is it breaks all design rules .... for the web mainly. you couldn't pull that off in color because all of the text is images. i like the concept and serves well for the site's purpose. but like benjo said, as other professionals know, it's not practical. just think of the fun you'd have tryin' to sell a concept like that to hp or microsoft or your local businesses!

Benjo - can you elaborate a little bit? Why isn't this site practical? Do you mean if you were going to try something like this for a different audience, say, corporate? I agree then, sure. Just trying to see your point is all.
DZ - see, everything you said is why I love it. In 2004, what designer in their right mind is going to use COURIER for their web site? And then to make it practically illegible in areas? On a web site? WTF, right? In the age of millions and millions of colors, they choose to use 2. Again, WTF? I really like those choices because that's something I would have never done.
I dunno. Regardless of the execution, what really struck me is that, holy cow! We don't have to design a web site that LOOKS like a web site. It breaks through the clutter and that's what we're supposed to do, right?

yeah, nin's sites have always been very odd.... i think it matches his style perfectly, reminds me of all the abstract cd cover he's got.
i agree its not practical enough for the whole world to understand, but i think its a briliant peice of work/expression.
BTW!!!! you see they got picts of the team in the studio, that sh!ts sick!!!! they are supposted to be coming out with the Tapeworm Project (trent reznor, maynard keenan, danny lohner, david bowie, marilyn manson, rob zombie, plus a lot more!!), pretty soon!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It's not practical because it isn't accessable. I hate sites that put allt he text in images. There is not way for the visually impaired to 'view' it because the screen readers can't read it.
I don't really even like the look of it either. All it is is dirty text here and there.

Yes that’s what I meant that it can't be used for a normal audience. This is a niche audience so it works like those of you who know this artist designs, you like it. I’m an artist but I have to look at things through a business perspective. It just makes you a better worker when you understand the business aspect of design.
This setting won’t sell to corporate America cause of it’s accessibility. Well the lack there of actually.
As far as creativity, well it’s very creative and edgy but to edgy for me. My design style is different anyway so it doesn’t sit well with me on that note alone but I’m saying aside from that of course.

practical = your parents could navigate there way around the site
that site was confusing for me....I am spend alot of time surfing sites
that site only works for a certain target audience which sometime works....
this would be a horrible site design for ebay or yahoo

Yeah, okay, that makes sense. But what if ebay or yahoo designed something that didn't look like a web site? How cool would that be?

They would lose a lot of users.
