hey kids! i was just sitting here, icing my butthttp://www.graphicdesignforum.com/emoticons/bootyshake.gif, when i remembered that a few of you are kinda sporty. and since we're all just so fantastic with giving our advice/opinions...i thought i'd ask for help.
after consulting the virtual sports therapist and the head instructors at my dojang, i've decided that my near-butt pain is my piriforous muscle clamping down on my sciatic nerve. also, i KNOW that my hams and calves are REALLY tight. now, i've got a big day on saturday, so i'd really like to know how to loosen these groups up. i'm naturally very bendy, but this is hurting and making my hips 'pop'...and i need to be tiptop for the weekend.
i've tried ice, heat, massage and stretching - no avail. any advice, or if you know of any other resources where i can find some advice, i'd really appreciate it.
thanks!
greetings, earthlings. take me to your dealer.

have access to a hot tub?
best advice is streach, streach, streach. if you have a certified trainer or anyone from a medacine field, ask for them to help you streach. always do some type of warm up before streaching and you will get further. *10 minutes jog to running pace, stair stepper, anything to get your heart up, sweat flowing and legs pumped just a little.
you will find that the first streaches of the day are the shortest, but require the most effort.
as for the hot tub, it's a great way to relax those muscles after a workout and streaching, plus it helps keep the blood and any lactic acid from pooling anywere in your body.
hope it helps!

Beer and a violent (chuckle) game of squash always loosens me up. Not too much beer though - that makes it worse.

silence & keyare: ha!
pixelmonkey: check, check and damn. i am a stretchy girl and, after a 2hr workout today, spent 1/2 hour just stretching - SO important. no access to a hot tub. :( i should look into the ymca i guess, but yuck. and i'm broke. and strapped for time... i just can't get that one dang spot, (top of my left hamstring, i guess... don't know if it's the nerve or the ham... rrrr!). in fact, (from a standing position), every time i raise my foot past my shoulder i feel tingling in my foot. <- that makes me think it's the nerve. i guess i'll just have to deal with it until i can afford the $225 sports massage fee.... :( poop. back to the tiger balm. whiff.
thanks though!

heat, stretching and rest is the only advice i can give you. of course, us sporty types always forget that last one. we try everything in the world to get to feelin' well enough to play whatever. we even play when we're 'crippled'.
i hurt my lower back my junior year in college. it would spasm and hurt like crazy. playing short didn't help either having to squat every single pitch. ouch! i used to go to the training room an hour before i had to be on the field. they'd hook me up to that machine where they send electric pulses to certain muscles to help loosen them up and then put one of those large heat packs on it. then after the game, i'd do the same thing for another hour but with ice. oh those college days ...

totally. my instructors have been really good in that they haven't made me work too hard the past few days. long, but not hard. i'll go in again tomorrow for a light workout - mainly just to get limber - and then STRETCH and STRETCH and STRETCH some more. it's all i bloody do, and it's been awhile now. i guess i've been building my muscles lately, so that's going to throw things out of whack. *sigh*
thanks 3H! i need to look into that hot tub idea, methinks...

Stretching is really the best. you have to work out that tightness.
but when all else fails... TIGER BALM. by far the best sports type cream out there. works wonders

i've always wanted to run in one or enter a triathlon, but never have ... the opportunity was there so i took. if anything, i'll get in really good shape. i don't plan on winning the thing, i just want to finish. besides, i've been wanting to do something like this before i turn 30, no better time than the present ...
