here's a new vector. his name is Monty Mallard. He's a cartoon duck that my grandfather devised when my dad was a wee one, and he's been kinda informally passed down to me. I'm wanting to do a father's day card for my dad using him. Let me know whut y'all think.

I think he's adorable. You might want to work on the type, though. ;)

not bad, there are a few spots that though that I think needs some tweaking, like around the neck, the highlight things throughout the wings, some of the values of the colors, the butt, the beak etc.

I am sure it will mean a lot to your dad - it's very thoughtful and will be especially meaningful to him.

I try not to give to many details away, so whomever it is doing the work can find it for themselves and see what is working and what is not. If you find it for yourself you will learn more than just making some changes someone told you. I pointed the areas out I think need work.

why is that, dont you think him finding out what may work better byhimself be better than someone just tellinghim what to do

What? I put it up here so that someone could help out if they were willing, and point out some stuff that I may not see, being so close to it. If I could see it, I wouldn't have to use GDF or any other forum 'cause I'd be pancaking perfect and therfore above all attempts at criticism. So, please, if you have any help, give it. If not, please keep your vague, cryptic comments to yourself.;)

I basically told you what I thought needed work, the neck, the values on the wings etc. I dont think that is very vague

You need a shadow under the bill. I think everything else can be stylistically forgiven.

Other than that, fine job.

that is one crazy looking duck - love the tracking ring on his leg or whatever the hell you call it.

I'm also developing this character for a possible comic strip submission to Ducks Unlimited.

i'm playing with the idea that those bands are like piercings/tatoos for ducks... thanks, Nebs!

duck looks cool, i think the one thing that is bothering me is the color of the inside of the mouth. Even though it may be accurate to a real duck, it doesnt seem to work here, i feel like it makes everything else look off, but everything is actually really good except for that. Try using more of a red color and black for the throat. Thats all, other than that i think you have a great little vector here dane, keep pushing the comic. Its good that you can identify with the history of the character, that will give you more areas to pull ideas from.

it actually not realistic at all. i'll look into that, see if I can make it work.

I like it very much Dane! Good job. I have recently done some stylistic vectors like this and truly enjoyed doing them....what I learned is that as someone else said - some things can be forgiven due to it being stylized!

nice job and I think that your dad will love the card!!

That's gonna be the hippiest duck I've ever seen.

How about dressing him up for some wild party? Sunglasses, belly/tounge ring, tattoo, cigarette and a beer on each hand. ;)

Or maybe he (or she?) is just an ordinary duck with a hidden identity. SuperDuck!

Thanks, d-zine!

Max,
Actually I have another character I came up with called the Hollywood Mallard (which is a nickname for the Shoveler Duck) where it's gonna have breast implants, multiple leg bands, sunglasses the whole shmear. Thanks!

she ought to have her beak ring, too. And maybe a wild hair... err... "feather"-do.

Looks awesome danedawg, I really like the bursting out character that this duck has, I just want to see him talk and animated! I think your father will be very very pleased!

I like the character, but the rendering could use a bit more contrast in my opinion. There just doesn't seem to be enough black in the shadows. Maybe you could duplicate the shadow areas, fill them with black and use either the multiply mode with low opacity or just lower the opacity. I dunno. Very good work, overall. I know your dad'll love the sentiment.
