So, a few days ago, my fiancées 256 Mb Cruzer flash drive wasn't working at all. No PC or Mac would recognize it, and the PC said it was a hardware malfunction when inserted. Unfortunately most of her school documents were on it (she teaches.)
So, I figured the data was lost anyway, so why not take it apart and mess with it. About 5 minutes later after touching various connections and pushing on them with a paperclip (while it was plugged in to my computer) it came back to life. I quickly copied the files off and burned them to a CD.
Yup, I'm thinking I'll be getting a little extra loving tonight. Life is good.
I'm just posting this for the heck of it.

She'll be getting a little speech to not store important files on only the flash drive, keep them on her computer as well. She mainly uses ti to bring and take files to and from work.

One hardware's malfunction is another hardware's treasure. Put on some Al Green and enjoy...

At the paper I worked at, we stored multiple editions of ads onto 1.5mb diskettes. Of course the pictures and clipart were usually pasted onto the text of ad! Ahhh, waxers!

Ask her if she ever dropped it?
Dropping a flash drive will usualy cause it to have problems, or not even work.
OH btw my flash drive survived the wash machine, forgot it in one of my shirt pockets, and it got washed. It still works. BTW its a Lexar 256mb flash drive.

Ha ha ha ha ha, waxers, wow does that bring back memories of prepress (paste-ups and mechanicals) OMG I can still smell the wax melting, somebody quick give me a light table and a t-square.

My hands have never been as soft as they were when I worked with that wax! I still have a light table and T-square - just for mockups and cutting. How about shooting stats - photos & screens!

Oh she's definitely dropped it, it's certainly been moderately abused.
That's crazy that your's survived being washed. Water and flsah drives are usually not a good combo.

I still have a light table and t-square as well. I was the guy who developed the negatives for jobs with fine lines or detail and also making rubber stamps, man we did alot of business cards, letterheads and also had a die cutting machine. Btw, I also know how to run a 2 color offset press.

With anything electronic, most of the time if its been dunked in water, if you open it up (if you can, with out breaking it) and let it air dry, not using it for say about a week-ish, the electronic device should be fine.
However if it (cordless or cell phone) was turned on and was say "thrown in a pool" filled with water, its done for. The chips and components are charged with some level of an electrical current, once water touches it (and water is a conductor of electricity), the current will conduct and send a charge to everything on the board, frying/shorting it out, even if its a very low voltage (battery powered: AAA, AA, etc.. or the likes). It's usualy the board chips that get fried.

That pretty much goes without saying, I think.

I've heard that anything electronic that gets wet and doesn't seem to be working should be placed in a fairly airtight container with uncooked rice and it will take the moisture out of the electronic gadget. It might not always work, but it's worth a shot, right?
