I just upgraded my old v3 iPod to the new color screen 30 gig one. Here is my question, maybe some of you can point me in the right direction. I want to be able to put full length movies on it, and am wondering how I go about doing that. Most of the movies I have on file are mpeg4, or avi, and wondering what the compression ratio is, and how to go about doing such a task. Does the new iTunes compress video for you, or am I going to need some kind of quicktime proggy?

any help much appreciated.

My brother-in-law converts them all for me I will find out the process he uses and will post up tonight or tomorrow - unless someone beats me to it!

I have about 20 movies on mine as of right now, so I know it works

There was some stuff posted on digg a week or so ago - I think it was Handbrake.

I have some program that I used to create PSP movies (Windows application) called PSP Mobile Movie Maker (or something like that). Because the PSP used MPEG4, I wondered if I copied the files to the iPod, if it'd work as well and sure enough, it did.

However, PSP has a different screen ratio as the iPod. I basically clip movies down and in the case of widescreen, squeeze the screen in just a little bit. The image is a bit squished and clipped, but it makes viewing 16:9 movies a lot more pleasant on the tiny ipod screen.

I recommend you to use yasa ipod video converter (http://www.yasasoft.com/ipodvideoconverter/) to convert avi and videos to ipod videos with its default settings. It works well to me so far.

Dude Checkit...
Convert DVD to MPEG4 for use on iPod:
Download the software handbrake
Open Handbrake it and pop in the DVD quit DVD prog if it runs
Destination File FOrmat MP4 file
Destination - Codecs: AVC/H.264 Video / AAC Audio
Video - Encoder: x264 (Bassline profiel)
Video Quality: Average bitrate (kbps): 400
Select 2-pass encosing
Audio - Sample rate (Hz): 44100
Bitrate (kbps):128
On Picure Settings... Set size to W320 H240
Keep aspect Ratio checked.

Click on RIP and it does the rest...

Hope that helps?!?!?

I just downloaded Handbrake since I got my new iMac, good suggestion Danny. I thought it was going to be some clunky freeware but it is very good. Free, and universal binary to boot. Pumped out Harry Potter 4 in about an hour.

I also cropped the movie on the side at 160 each to better fit it to 320x240 resolution and fill the iPod screen better.

I haven't checked this out yet, but is Handbrake strictly for Macs? If I were to get another iPod (after getting that extended warranty this time), I would definitely want to put movies on the thing, but I'm on a PC.

Only Mac and Linux right now according to what I read, but they are working on a Windows port.

Not sure if you can get hold of a beta copy from somewhere but as far as i know its just for Macs It does rock though., how did you manage to rip it in an hour??? It usually takes me ages...
