I just got off the phone with my parents and they are still without power. They are expected to get it back sometime tomorrow. They are about a 1/2 hour below Morea and I in my hometown. The entire city is without power. My parents have been using their fireplace to keep warm. They didn't have a comfortable night. My Dad is keeping the fire going but it's not doing a great job of keeping the house warm. I swear my Dad could sleep in a snow bank but my Mom doesn't like the cold at all. I am hoping the power comes on sooner. Last night and again tonight it is supposed to go down to the single digits. After starting out at around 40 or so in the morning yesterday, a brutal artic storm came ripping into the area. It brought 70+ mph winds, hail and thunderstorms. Dropped the temperature down to the teens. Tearing trees ups, blowing garages off ppls houses, tearing off roofs and downing power lines everywhere. It was extremely devastating when a state worker was killed on a route into the local state park that has very tall pine trees. He was killed when his truck was crushed. I know exactly where it happened too. I used to run right on that same road when I was in high school. It's such a beautiful road. It's so tragic.
To read more about what happened in our area check out this link to one of our local papers.

Just an added note...on top Stratton Mt in VT they clocked winds up to 130+mph. CRAZY!!

Neuro, why don't you invite your folks up to your place. If it's only half an hour.
Fireplaces don't keep the house warm - unless it's a central stack rather than on an outside wall. You might stay comfortable sitting right in front of it but it draws cold air into the remote rooms and puts most of the heat right up the chimney.

I did. I am a better son than that. Give me more credit than that. ;)
Unfortunately my father doesn't want to let the entire house drop below freezing because the water pipes could burst. That would just add to their problems. Unfortunately they can be stubborn ppl at times. I told them they were welcome to stay up here for the night or at least my mom but she is going through some medical stuff and it would be difficult for her to get up here. I can only do what I can. I made the offer. I plan to push it again when I check on them later this afternoon.
They also have a special attachment that blows the heat out from the fire place into the room. It keeps at least that room at a good temperature.

They could always drain the lines if it gets to that point. The pipes furthest from the fire place could freeze anyway. It was pretty windy here in Jersey but we never got a storm or anything, and we didn't loose power at all.

Their power is back on at my parents place after over 48 hours of none. It's good to know they will be warm tonight. There are places that are more remote that could take around 3-4 days. I can't imagine being any of those people. Just wanted to update.

DUDE I CAN RELATE!!!!! MY PPPPPPOWER """sHIVER SHIVER"""" WAS OUT UNTIL 1AM THIS MORNING. I SENT RANDY AND VICKY TO HER PARENTS AND STAYED WITH THE DOG AND THE CAT. MADE THE MOST OF IT THOUGH BOUGHT A 12 PACK AND ORDERED A PIZZA DELIVERED AND HAD MY OWN LITTLE PARTY. I ALSO HAD ONE TREE DOWN THAT HIT THE FRONT CORNER OF MY HOUSE AND ANOTHER FELL AND SMASHED THE OTHER CORNER. ALL IN ALL A PRETTY LUCKY ACCORDING TO MY INSURANCE ADJUSTER A LOT OF PEOPLE IN THE AREA HAVE A LOT OF DAMAGE. MOST OF MINE IS COSMETIC FOR THE MOMENT. THERE ARE STILL SECTIONS HERE IN SOUTH GLENS FALLS WITHOUT POWER. JUST A BLOCK AWAY.

there are still folks without power today. They say that everyone's power should be restored by the end of the day today, but still... I can't imagine.

Makes me want to go out and buy a generator. Those poor people what a mess they'll have to deal with when it comes back on.

this all happened Friday afternoon, so they've been since then with no power. Shelters with generators were set up in the area, but I can't imagine being without power for nearly a week in 20-degree weather.
How cold does it have to be before pipes burst?

ground temp needs to be anything below freezing really so air temp would have to be around -5? but maybe even lower than that... we've had -7 before and the pipes were ok...
it's not warm here but it could be worse... fingers crossed for you guys over there...stay positive! :)
