I think I'd prefer to see the bottom photo used in the top layout, only because it communicates "trekking" better (at least in my mind). But the black bar gives it a little visual interest and for some reason just says "GUIDE" to me.

But keep in mind where these will be placed -- magazine racks, etc. The title in the top version seems VERY low if these are going to be sitting on a brochure/magazine type rack.

So what I'm getting at -- pull the bottom photo up to the top layout and pull the black bar and title up so it occupies a smaller space toward the top.

Does that make sense? No coffee yet for me, sorry.

The images seem to be a bit under-saturated. Perhaps a new more vibrant image would help liven up the cover some.
