This photo looks earily like the early 5G iPod video leaked hours before the debut. Could they really be coming out with a new one already? Rumor has it this one is supposed to be used mainly for video, with a larger screen and possibly larger HD. You have to have Jobs's income to stay current in the Mac world.

Pretty much 95% of "early" shots are fake (anyone remember the iHome Media "Centre"? (http://dms.tecknohost.com/macrumors/i/ihome/)), but on the other hand, I've been amused when a picture leaks and message boards call "Fake!" when it turns out to be a real product.

I think it would be too soon to introduce a new iPod, but who knows. All I keep hearing on message boards is how Apple plans to introduce a true video iPod. Uh guys, we already have a "true" video iPod ;)

I just got a video iPod not too long ago and already have scratches in the screen - I would hate to see how this one would look after a month of use!

Satchel, the rumors for this thing are that it's only for video, so they may take extra precaution to protect the screen. Isn't there a company that makes stick on screen protectors out of kevlar or something like that? The fake "new product" images usually look like professional promo photographs. The ones like this that look like they were taken quickly with a camera phone end up being real. Of course, there are exceptions. The iHome home media center Patrick mentioned comes to mind.

They aren't going to play music, just video's huh? That seems pretty stupid if you asked me. I personally just had to kill 2 days and when I whipped out the iPod I watched about 10 minutes of a movie the rest of the time it was music... I think for a flight or something where I am stuck in one place the video would be nice but I just dont utilize the video part of the iPod enough to get one that ONLY plays videos!

Oh and I have a case for my iPod, but none of the attachments fit while it's on so I end up taking it out - I should look into a stick on screen guard, that would probably help out a lot!!

Satch, these guys sell the bulletproof, diamond laced, kryptonite screen protectors:

Thanks Jason, I'll have to pick one of those up - I gotta figure out how to get rid of the scratches I have now before I put it on though... I know they have some type of polish or something, I'm new to the whole iPod craze, I'm still learning... So I bough the 60GB right out of the gate - that's like giving a 16 year old a Corvette for their first car... but you live and you learn.

Satch, I've heard that Brasso has some success with removing those scratches. Do a google search, I'm sure you'll find something. As for me, I have the 30GB iPod photo, and I just keep it in an iPod sock. Few scratches on mine, fwiw.

It's hard to find off the street unless you have a dealer near you, but Novus Polish # 1 and #2 works pretty good. But as always, your milage may vary. If not careful you could possibly scratch it more

update on new iPod rumors.
Here's a new, more convincing image...

Ya know I heard this rumor a while ago on digg - they had some mocks of what it might look like and they showed a graphic touch screen wheel on them - so they could be for both video's and music still... I guess it's all speculation until they unveil it though, huh?! I think it looks pretty cool - probably pretty spendy and not worth the price tag to me!

I think this was disproved, wasn't it?
Screen would be scratched so easilyyyy!!!!

That may be real. Like Sachel said, then next one is supposed to have a touch screen for all the controls. And the description was very much like that image. I think it's still supposed to play music as well.

I love it! I bet that guy has a mile wide smile on his face for the next week. The thread at Macrumors.com was up to almost 1,000 posts with people ripping apart and analyzing every pixel of that image. They talked about the part number on the sticker, used "enhancement" that would make the CSI's jealous, and staked the lives of their children on whether this image was real or fake. Beautiful!! There were probably 100 posts about what exactly the chinese characters meant, and where in China they were likely written.

The guys at macrumors.com are now arguing over the validity of this debunking video. There are about 400 posts talking about the various subtle "differences" between the still photo and the video.

These people are iPod hungry!

I think there is going to be something like this sometime, the digg link showed patent applications with drawings similar to this picture, but I doubt it'll be ready for the market anytime soon... testing maybe in progress - but who really cares, at least that's the way I look at it.

So when is the big reveal on whatever Apple is announcing? Is it tomorrow?

What i'd like to know is why the flock would anybody want to watch a movie on a 2 inch screen.

Jason Fraker

weiner - the event is tomorrow at 9am (pacific). Just wait until wednesday morning, when the quicktime stream is up at apple.com.

Kool, I know a few people who have the 5G iPod, and say it's no problem to watch movies on it. A 2" screen 12" from your eye is comparable to watching a 25" TV across the room.

It's really not that bad... but like I have said before, I still use the music part of the iPod way more than anything else. But if I were to take a trip, I'm sure I would watch videos to pass the time.

but then again I'm still young and have perfect eye sight, so maybe that has a little to do with it not bothering me. I cant speak for anyone else but I am pretty impressed at how well it handles movies.

Well, I don't know about that....but the iPod's screen size is especially handy for watching video where you normally couldn't / wouldn't (like the gym).

or at work in your cube... if someone starts walking toward you just flip it over grab your mouse and people think you're working and listening to music. I assume, I dont know this from experience!

You tube has a video of this thing - it seems pretty big, like a tablet pc, not really a threat to the ipod.

When I watch a movie I like to kick back on the couch with a bowl of popcorn not hold the movie up in front of my face LOL. But don't mind me I don't even own a music ipod or any of those other things rockem mentioned. :D

oh i agree with you I would never buy one to wwatch movies either, but alot of people do do that, The only reason I would have one is because you cant get it without it anymore. The one nice thing about it is the video out, as soon as they get the resolution up better on those it will be awesome, you can carry around tons of movies plug it into any tv and watch away

I'm glad they came out with the video iPod simply because the guys who were taking a movie and ripping it into individual frames, importing those frames as photos and watching the movie by madly rubbing the clickwheel were starting to scare me. I guess those guys had a second iPod with an audio track of the entire movie that they played in their earbuds while watching the "video" on the other one.

i'm just waiting for the Opitional TV Tuner hook up. then i can watch the TV shows i'm missing on my way home from work.

Jason Fraker
02-28-2006, 04:38 PM
Yup, pretty soon you will be able to watch any TV show ever made at any time you wish and almost any place you wish. Is that a GOOD thing?

Rumor has it Apple may introduce a full-blown movie store today. It is thought you may be able to pay a certain price to have access to the move for a few days, and another price to have permanent access (with no burning).

Boring. It's just speakers with an iPod dock and an audio input jack. Yawn.
