A little while back I read a thread where some people were concerned about design jobs going overseas. Well this article right here:
http://www.howdesign.com/db/features/followyourheart1.asp
Puts all that to rest and assures us that our jobs are safe at home. Some of you may already have read this if you check out the HOW site often. If not, then enjoy. I thought it was a really great read.

Not all.
There are some holes in that theory. Mostly to do with making a buck and American laziness. Design jobs already go overseas. If an Indian programmer makes $200 bucks a month I'd imagine a designer being paid less than that. If given the choice between fast and cheap or 'high concept' and expensive, American Business will opt the former every time.
Don't rest on your laurels yet.

I know about the call centers going overseas... In Panama right now there are like 5 call centers including DELL Spherion, etc... And they pay like $500.00 month for a sales rep. plus a crappy bonus that even if u sell lots of computers u will get like $80.00 more per month. I can say that cuz Ive been there :D
and in Graphic Design, there are several companies too over here, paying graphic designers eve $300.00 for hundreds of designs monthly.
The sad part besides your jobs going overseas is that they come here and pay crappy salaries :( In Panama so you can have a decent life you better make above $1000.00
There are also Canadians companies and soon europeans but more like for manufacturing.
Im still moving to the states and I hope everything just stays or gets to have a balance.
Greetings,
Helena

and this is absolutely why I think for every labororer overseas the government should tax the companies enough to make it not worthwhile for them to do it.
Dont tell me about global economy, cause thats bull...when we're shipping jobs that service our country off to other countries. Its dangerous if we cannot be self sufficent.
Its an ethical issue for me, those people overseas should be making much more than they are.

I know our jobs are going overseas. I know of too many people who send logo designs to somebody in India for like, $40 USD. Actually, didn't somebody earlier this week on this forum say that his boss would send logos to be recut to India for like, $50? A printer or something.
No I can't compete with that price. Not even close. So I have to tailor my business to people who are committed to keeping jobs in America, even if it costs them more than outsourcing to India would.
And I'll spare you all my doom and gloom theories today. :) It's sunny outside for a change.

now you lost mehehehe lol. :=)
And in a way it happens the same in panama.. Companies that close and then go to another country like Salvador or countries like that that they could even pay half of what they already were paying here...
Companies should be tax.. totally agree...
Is weird you know... I used to sell also through ebay, for a company and they were kinda underground thing.. lucky me i quit before something weird happened an excoworker told me that all of the sudden he went to the office and there was nothing. they just moved to another place and he was lucky he didnt have anything int he office and they just sent the paycheck to his account as we use to get paid..
Im telling you suspicious things too.
Long weekend for me no work until next thursday because of carnivals, so I will take a look on tutorials and finish those logos, I dunno why r taking me so long, maybe is the flue.
Tschüs,
Helena

I've never been worried about design jobs going oversees. Programming, yes, because I see it happen all the time. I've just never been involved with a company that would 'sink so low' that they would farm out design work to India.

Interesting thought here...
I know that the whole world is talking about this "global economy" as far as business is concerned, but there are still ots of cultural differences to take into consideration.
For example, color has different meanings in different cultures. Have a look over this thread for some examples.

and we also saw results of printing a questionable cartoon as well, an eruption of violence that really was scary for a while
the culture issue is huge regarding designing for an international audience

Yeah, the culture differences is the first thing that has always popped to mind when people talk about design being farmed out overseas. I mean, there have been alot of cultural influences from different countries that have been adapted to design in the United States in my lifetime (cultures such as Asian, Mexican, and European), but on a purely commercial, day to day basis I think in county designers still have their jobs.
