President Bush and Secretary of State Colin Powell are sitting in a Texas bar. A guy walks in and asks the barman, "Say isn't that Bush and Powell sitting over there?"
The bartender says, "Yep, that's them."
So the guy walks over and says, "Wow, this is a real honor. What are you guys doing in here?"
Bush says, "We're planning World War III."
The guy says, "Really? What's going to happen?"
Bush says, "Well, we're going to kill 140 million Iraqis and one blonde with big breasts."
The guy exclaimed, "A blonde with big breasts? Why kill a blonde with big breasts?"
Bush turns to Powell, punches him on the shoulder and says, "See, smartass? I told you no one would worry about 140 million Iraqis!"

Very good... I'll have to pass that one on
Ok that's funny, but I swear -- there is such a HUGE nugget of truth to that.
If anything bad happens to a blonde, middle class white girl (and you should be able to rattle off a myriad of these), the media is saturated with coverage. Or even an attractive middle class brunette for that matter (aka lacy peterson).
I find these stories to be as tragic as the next person, but I refuse to sit and watch just on principle. Bad shit happens to people EVERY. DAMN. DAY. Trouble is, they're not attractive, affluent females and so ... who cares to watch stories about them? Kinda makes me ill. Yet another news magazine (Prime Time) devoted to that gal in Aruba last night and my boyfriend insisted on watching it. I feel terrible for her family, but come on.
greyghost
02-24-2006, 05:37 PM
I agree, EC. The girl is dead. Sad to say - let the story die too.
Coming from a news background, all this sensationalism drives me crazy. So many times I wind up reading news from Britain because THEIR coverage tells me things about what is going on in MY country before American news says "boo!"
I am convinced it's all based on ratings and sensationalism. Let me make one small reference: Pit Bulls. Oh the horror. They're all bad dogs, bred to kill, we should ban them all.
Half the "pits" in the stories turn out not to be pits at all. They can't even properly identify a pit bull from a Rottweiler (also a total couch potato of a dog) Poor stereotyped dogs. I will always have one. Why? Because they are sweet, loving animals. Bite me if you think otherwise.
Accuracy was DRILLED in my head when I was studying journalism. I think we are back in an age of "yellow journalism." Sensationalism. I'm bored when I watch the news, I just read it off BBC or someplace.
I can't watch the news anymore either. I mean, it's often SO SUBTLE. In just deciding WHAT stories to run, they have a huge influence on our collective psyche.
I am really cynical when I watch a story that is so-called "objective" ... what parts of the story did they leave out? And who are they pandering to?
You don't see a lot of coverage about New Orleans, or at least I don't notice it (I also keep the faux news stations off anymore) ... but isn't that like, the biggest tragedy we've had on our soil since 911 or something? I really don't get that.

Not a lot of the New Orleans news was factual either. So much finger pointing, I don't know what the truth is anymore there.
And probably a lot of the 9-11 stuff that we take as "fact" isn't true either.
And let's not even bring up this administration. I am WAITING for the books to come out when this administration steps down.
And let's not even bring up this administration. I am WAITING for the books to come out when this administration steps down.
I have a bookshelf full of them already. Like Richard Clarke's book -- I mean, granted, he left the administration and THEN wrote a book, so I don't buy into everything hook line and sinker -- you never really know the true motivations of the people in power.
But I have read enough "insider" books (and don't forget the Downing Street Memo) to know that they're just a bunch of war-mongering, power-hungry, oil-thirsty liars.
Whoa sorry, where was I? LOL I wasn't talking politics, I swear. ;)

I think this administration is trying to orchestrate another 9-11 or something similar so that they can pass a law thru congress that allows them complete dictatorial powers forever, while everyone's busy/worried. (Patriot Act, anyone?) They stir shit up in middle east, sell our ports to an Arab country, & don't seem to care about our very porous southern border. It's all a CONSPIRACY!!!

No, I have read some books too. And they really are interesting, in between wanting to throw up. lol!!!
Did you guys see the skit on SNL with Horatio Sans when he did his "George W. Bush is a Genius" bit? OH man that was so hiliarious. But it's true ... every new distraction, every new "big development" or scandal ... it detracts from the last. And people have short attention spans, so they forget all the bullshit that's gone down in the last 6 years.
It'll take historians several lifetimes to unravel it all I'm sure.

OK, 9-11. What kind of president sits there and reads a children's book when his country is under attack?
With his Saudi connections... did he know it was coming?
And look at how fast the Patriot Act got passed. Like it was ready and after the attack, they just whipped it out there, with a great-sounding name so we'd be all for it --- until the noose was tied?

Actually there's quite a bit too that. There are people that don't believe in our system of government and their aim is to destroy it so we have no choice but to rebuild it from scratch. Yeah no kidding on that, it's a serious thing. Do you really think that the neocons give two craps about what Thomas Jefferson intended? No.
Pay attention to history, and you'll see that even the mighty United States of America can crumble. I see it happening before my very eyes -- don't you? Voting irregularities, human rights abuses (I know this is a really controversial one, but if you want to argue, bring it on, I'll be obnoxious about it though just warning you lol), all the special interest money in politics right now controlling our representatives like puppets ... oh crap I'm depressed now. No, I could very easily agree with that.
Human rights abuses - here's one: they're experimenting with retarded kids in state custody. I bet I can find the article too. It burns me up because when my Down Syndrome sister was born, services were right there telling my mom "you don't have to keep her, the state can take her and you can forget this ever happened." Mom hadn't even left the hospital yet!

well, it's just become one of those "things"... I don't know exactly... here's the part I can fill you in on:
When I worked a lousy job in the print shop, I had said to someone that their hard work should be rewarded with a congratulatory taco.
When I LEFT that job, Neuro printed about 2 dozen photos of tacos he googled and hung them all up in my cubicle, so when I came to work, everything was covered with tacos.
Someone reached a 'posting milestone' and I offered them a congratulatory taco, as a reminder of that running gag, and from then on, any time someone reached 100 / 500 / 1000 posts (or whatever) they started asking for congratulatory tacos. Now everybody gets them. :p

Ahhhggg! Now I've gone and messed up my post count of 666!
I'm really tired of all you doomsayers and gloomy-gussess interrupting my peaceful, relaxing afternoon of bathing in gold coins and jewels, while getting a backrub from a skurvey woman. But it looks like I'll have to delay the festivities a bit longer whilst I draft this enlightening message.
I too, used to foolishly beleive that the current regime was an inept, malicious group of corporate lackeys intent on changing our political system to one that more closely resembles a corporation - a corporation that can be gutted to outfit the cheif executives with golden parachutes for the inevitable "running the the ground" of the business. I also used to think that despite the obviousness of what they were doing, we the American people would let it happen to us because stopping it would require us to lift a finger. Eeeewww!
I know, you must be saying to yourself "L.B.A., what a fool you were!" True, true. But I now realize the truth - nothing bad will ever happen if we just ignore it! Had we ignored the Nazis - nothing bad would have happened - the Holocaust would never have happened because no one would have known about it! Think about it. As far as the public would have known, millions of lives would have been spared, because the deaths would never have been reported!
Paying attention and getting worried about it was the number one cause of the Great Depression. Had we the wisdom to ignore the warning signs at its onset, the American people would have continued their spending orgy, and nothing would have changed. Instead we paid attention and stopped spending money, which just made things worse.
The Civil War - easily avoided if the North ignored the South and vice versa.
The Black Plague - could have been ignored.
Bears - just play dead - which is just another form of ignoring.
I could go on and on and on, but I think I've made my point.
Even the most serious problems are only problems if we let them be - turn your back on them and deny them existence and they'll fade into Limbo just like Freddy at the end of Nightmare on Elm Street.
And now back to my jewel bath - a bit lower you skurvey wench!

That's only if the dems are ballsy enough to put her in. I'd vote for a woman, but odds are most won't. And they know it. It looks like it may be Kerry, Edwards, Clinton for sure to run for pres. There are a couple of others that look to be gearing up, but no one's sure about yet. IMO, I'd say, that we have a good chance of getting a dem pres., next term if GWB keeps flubbing up. The only real chance 'Pubs have in McCain, and he'd be great mudslinging fodder for his complete turnaround on GWB's failures.

best idea to date, that book that im always referencing "Everything you know is wrong" has the data on ALL of the major political big wigs, and lists not only there income, but what companies they are major stock holders in, and guess who gets the big $$$ contracts??? you guessed it. I wish 90% of this god forsaken country would wake the **** up. we need another civil war, but this time the people vs. the govt.
Im also going to go as far to say that I would give up my right as an american citizen *cough* "enemy of the state" and start living by the original constituition and bill of rights, as stated in the union, which is a complete seperate entity from the corporation aka: United States of America. Because when all is said and done, the govt is nothing more then a giant business, and we are its slave drones. I wish people would discovery the truth about history, about how we got founded, about how USA even became a money hungry corporation who's only goals were to make the weak weaker and the strong stronger.
I could go into extreme details here, such as how your american flag is hung, vertical or horizontal? Because when your standing in front of a judge of the union, that makes a difference. Basically everything that has happened since the constitution and the bill of rights were formed, has been one huge lie. And the govt is very very good at making people forget, and feeding them there own information to believe. They teach flawed history in school from the get go because they don't want you learning the truth. Shit we shouldn't even be paying taxes, we should have NO drug laws, we should feel truly free, and in this day and age, I feel the exact opposite. But, if I get my hands on this manual that I only got to see for a short time, you guys might be looking at someone who has to go into hiding because I have contacts that want to spread it like wild fire.
You see, some years ago, a very wise man (attorney) sat down and basically wrote a book about how the american govt is nothing but one huge lie, how our social's are nothing but #'s for them to keep track of us....for what...well in case we rebel, thats why its called the enemy of the state. We were based on a union by state, not on a national level, when I can get this information out to people, you may see the next revolution.
<end rant>
and full circle d-frag. This is what I meant about the USA crumbling. Every super power in history has, we're fools if we think it couldn't happen to us. It WILL happen if people wake up. And even if they don't.
I honestly do wish that we could correct some of these issues and really implement a true democracy here. There I go dreaming again. lol

Well I suppose there are many doomsayers in this forum!
Probably Edwards will run, I don't know if H. Clinton will or not.
The whole thing is so messed up - but Americans in general WILL NOT do anything about it, or start to complain about it, or wake up in the slightest until it hits them in the pocket, until it affects their daily life.
And by then it will be too late.
Does anyone else think the "dumbing down" of America's schools is no accident? Stupid, uneducated people are easy to lead by the nose. They are the masses. Keep them happy, and they don't care what goes on in the rest of the world.
I have no idea how to wake people up before we are all implanted with microchips (that day may be nearer than you think - they already have GPS tracking devices in most cell phones, Alzheimer's patients, some kids, and some people with major medical problems have all been implanted with microchips so they can be scanned). We can be watched by satellite, our computers can be monitored, our bank accounts, credit cards, all of it tracks our daily activities.
Anyway. I vote we all move in with the Amish.
